Brake problems

I have a 1996 Cherokee which has just developed a problem with the brake system. As soon as you touch the pedal the system reacts as if you have just done an emeggency stop and locks the wheels. This happens even with the lighest pressure on the pedal. The system has ABS and the fluid levels have not dropped! Any ideas????

do all four lock up, or is it the front or back, could be a number of things, bad propartion valve, may need rear drums adjusted. Did you have any work done to the brakes

Appears to be just front but I could be wrong. I did not have any work done to the system before hand. Went on a 40 mile trip yesterday and all was fine. Went down the street today and nearly went through the screen!

I'm sure I'm an idiot but why in the world are you driving this thing? Isn't it enough for you that your brakes are goofed? What more do you need to stop driving and take this thing in for repairs? I mean come on. What if the next time you hit the brakes NOTHING happens and you run over someone? Wouldn't you feel totally stupid?

Who cares what's wrong with it and what anyone on this web site can offer you? That thing belongs in the brake shop now!

Where in the note does it say I am driving around with this fault!!! If you read the text I drove to the end of my street and the problem appeard. The car has been sitting outside my house ever since. I thought someone may have some ideas before I take it in to Jeep and get ripped off as usual.

sounds like you may have a bad caliper or its not sliding right on the slide.

Have you checked to see if your emergency brake cable is not screwed up? If it was hung up on another cable or a frame rail it might be getting pulled accidentally. otherwise I'd say proportioning valve too.
