Touch up paint

Ok i have a nice sized scratch on the side of my car and jsut got my touch up paint today. I was wondering if there is some sort of method i should use in order for it to look the best. Someone said to fill it and after it drys to buff it. What do you guys and girls do? Is there any method that you use that works well??? Thanks Blue93G20
