Looking to get a a 'Maro, '93 and up, I'm just curious what's a good mileage number, to buy one at. I was thinking at most 40,000 miles, but I'm not sure.

Either a Z28 or an SS, so could somone fill me in on a good mileage to purchase one at?

Oh sorry, I must not made it very clear, but I meant like the mileage on the vehicle, not the MPG.

Sure , I will get right on banning Kaotik. Give me a minute :evillol:. Hey leave the guy alone. Some people like GM, some people like Ford :screwy: and there are a rare few that like both :eek7:.

   40k? Probably not in your life. Average driven miles on any car is about 12,000 a year. So a 93 is 12 years old.. You are looking at 12,000 * 12 = 144,000 miles on average.

Xeno, not everyone that owns a camaro drives it daily. My grandpa has an 86 IROC with 45k on it..

*and my 93 has 122K.. and i drive it all over hell and back.. put 10k alone on it last summer.. so its not impossible

hell i just left the shop and a 2000 ss was there getting some performance upgrades and it only had 2600 miles on it, i couldnt beleave it, had the new car smell in it still i never in my life seen that before, the guy then told me this was the first time his car has ever seen rain (because its raining in tampa now) im woundering how the hell can u have such a nice car not to mention how much he paid for it and he really never drives it.

Yeah, i asked on both, because I've narrowed my next vehicle to either the 'Stang, or the 'Maro. Yeah i know it's usally, your a Ford guy, or a Chevy guy, well right now I'm Dodge guy, if you simply go buy my truck, but really I'm not any of 'em. As long as it's domestic, it's fine with me.

At least I got more than one reponse in this forum at least...

Not saying its impossible but highly unlikely.

Does anyone have an actual reponse to the question?

Obviously the lower the better! I bought my 89 with around 265k kms on it and the engine and tranny have never been worked on it and it still goes like mad.

i would say if you're lookin for a 4th gen, look for something as low under 100k as you can afford, because around that mark is when shit starts to go bad, as i am noticing. water pump, optispark, etc.. and the LT1's are notorious for leaking oil.. this all generally happens around 100k..

you know when i said something last month about lt1's leaking oil i was almost beheaded, im glad someone else said that because its true, everybody i know with an lt1 tell me that sooner or later the damn thing will be on someones lift getting a oil leak fixed. thats why i decided not to put a lt1 in my car when i was going to do a swap.where were u a month ago kaotik?

The Lt1's are know for leaking oil but it's only due to the thin ass oil they use 5w-30 full synthetic, and the engine doesn't have a valve cover breather. Because of that the rear intake gasket which is a bead of silicon blows out.

Anyway a response to the question. If you want a car to collect than the lower the miles the better. If you want a daily driver i'd say in the 50,000 to 90,000 range. If you want to go really cheap then go with one over 100k. Although when the 93-97 Lt1's hit 95 to 100k they usually need a optispark, spark plugs, waterpump, and sometimes the A.I.R pump not the A/C pump.

I bought my 95 Z with 111,000mi on it for $3,700 six months ago. It took me about 4 months to find it, but if you are patient and scour the earth, you'll find a good deal. Mine needed paint, tires, plugs/wires (headers, exhaust, ofcourse) ect. I've got about $5,100 in it including the sale price and now it's pretty much perfect. Just look in classifieds and dont forget the 12,000 mi per year rule. Anything too far past that should tell you youre looking at a car that's had a hard life, no matter the year model.

philly.. i was here about a month ago.. i just dont read every thread, so i might have missed it. but if i'd seen it i'da stuck up for ya. similar problems happened to my buddy chad, his 94 Z hit about 98k and all hell broke loose.. he ended up getting pissed and sold it, but i really feel bad for whoever bought it.. chad beat the living hell out of his car.

see i know i wasnt crazy, i knew there was some common reason why they leaked oil, but i dont own one myself i just hear the guys in the shop that have them talk about/ and push me away from going with an lt1, because the truth is i wanted a older 4th gen because i dont like them damn light covers on the ls1. the car doent look bad ass it kindda looks b**ch! not knocking anyone who has a ls1 but i thought that was damn weak of them to do the headlamps like that so originaly i didnt want one, but everyone was like the ls1 was this bad ass engine and then i drove one and never mind the look it feels nice as hell. the lt1 prices are damn good now and days but ive been turned away from them because of maintanance and because of base power.

The 79 Z28 has 7800 miles on it.

yeah, my LT1 leaks but not bad. Just enough to get the engine dirty. No puddles in the driveway or anything like that. Originally I did want an LS1, but I ran across my car at such a good deal. I couldn't pass on it.
But,youre right about the high maintainence thing Philly. It seems like it's always something...

its sad its like that but im telling u it isnt just the lt1's we are all dumping loot into our cars for one reason or another becuase they are old now the ls1 guys may not be they are still under the old as hell mark, but i guess it is what it is.

I'm on the same page as you Philly, I prefer the LT-1's front end, manily because of the lights, they look meaner and stealthier. I also dislike tri-color tailights (amber), but it's not that big of deal. However I want an LS-1, I could always swap it, but I'm not really into engine swapping, unless your swapping out a blown motor.

I think I might have to put my Muscle car buy on hold, just going to college very soon, and may not have the funds, my only concern is, the longer I wait, the harder it's gonna be to find a decent F-Body, boy I really hope GM brings 'em back.
