i'm working on a 96 blazer with a 4.3 it has a non adjustable distributor with the plug wires going on the sides of the cap. i'm trying to reinstall the distributor with it had t.d.c of #1 since i don't know were the engine was before. how do u install it?. i tried the method of rotor to the #1 spot on the cap, no luck. i got some instructions from alldata and snap-ons shop key they both say bring it to t.d.c and install with rotor pointing at the hole were the cap screws on nearest the flat area, with no luck the way either. any help would be great. thanks

With the engine on TDC, drop the distrubutor in pointing to #1 if it doesn't fire, remove and reinstall the distributor 180 degrees.

You need to have the motor at 0 degrees TDC... Then point the rotor to the number 1 position (between 7 and 8 o'clock). Note the direction of the cross bar for the oil pump shaft at the bottom of the distributor at this point. Using a really long handled flat head screw driver turn the oil pump shaft in the same direction. Drop/twist in. It may take a couple of tries. If you are off by 1 tooth in either direction the truck will not start. If you are off by 180 degrees you will not start (unless you reverse the wire order)

Make sure you're on the exaust stroke when setting it. You could also be at 180 degrees out.
