loss of power

we think it could be due to a clogged fuel filter? .. it'll run fine but then all of a sudden lose all power... if i let off the accelerator, it'll *usually* gain some speeed again... was told that the problem could be due to a lack of fuel pressure? ...

sometimes it completely dies, sometimes it just slows to a crawl then can speed back up.... its kinda scary!

any ideas? (this is a 91 geo , auotmatic trans with 92000 on it)

Yes, this is a classic fuel pressure symptom. I had one of mine do the same thing and it was caused by a bad fuel pump. I hope that is not the case for you Peanut, but it is a possibility.

Put a fuel pressure guage on the larger of the two fuel lines that run from the throttle body and hold the guage up on the dash with your windshield wiper. Drive the car until it starts to act up, I'll bet you will see a drop in fuel pressure.

One more thing, Peanut. I seriously doubt if this would be the problem considering you live in Nevada, but...

I have seen moisture in the fuel line cause an engine to act as you describe. Try putting a bottle of "HEET" or some other gas line conditioner into your gas tank. Try this first before spending a lot of money.

I'll see about trying that.. we changed the fuel filter, to no avail.. figuring now that it must be the fuel pump ... if someone had put something in my gas, then changing the filter should help right?

.... i'll ask my "mechanic" aka boyfriend;) what he thinks about the "heet" -- doubtful, but a definite possibility
we have had a lot of rain etc
