codes

I checked my codes the other day as the check engine light would come on and then go off every once in a while - I got two - 32 EGR control solenoid, 34* Knock sensor (KS). I checked all the vac. hoses and found a leak going into the fresh air intake and fixed it. Could that have caused the EGR code to come up? I looked at the Haynes manual to try and check the EGR and it doesn't seem to be getting vac..
I hate to just run out and buy the EGR control Solenoid - not sure the cost.
Also, could that vac. leak cause the knock sensor to come on? I've never checked the codes and have had the car for several years - so don't know how long they have been on there.
I've driven the car around and the light hasn't come on since I fixed the vac. leak, so don't know if it's fixed or not. My son is taking off for a 1600 mile trip with it in several days - would like to think everything is working before he leave. Or just assume - no lights - A -OK
Could some one tell me how to check the egr, or egr solenoid incase I'm not doing it right?
thanks.

egr is operated by vacuum. a leak will cause that problem. just because you didnt feel much vacuum to the or out of the solnoid doest mean its bad. the solnoid will open the egr when it is at certain temp,
and then cut off vacuum when it needs to.
it propably fixed the KS too. did you reset the computer after fixing the leak? if not just unhook
neg side of battery for a few minutes.

15 minutes should be enough and the air leak was most likely the problem.
