I have a 1992 Rodeo w/ V6, when I first start the car the engine will warm up to normal temperature. After a mile or so the gauge becomes very erratic. When the gauge is in the red cold air comes from the heater. I replaced the thermostat with one rated for 195 degrees but didn’t solve the problem. I also verified the fluid level in radiator and overflow. I didn’t find any questions that exactly matched my problem.
Could this be caused by a defective radiator cap or pinhole in the hoses?
Thank you in advance for your assistance.

This is a common cause of an old plugged radiator. If you are still running the OEM rad, switch it out.

Depending on the state of the tanks, you may be able to get the rad re-cored for a cheaper price than a new one. Personally, I wouldn't go that route, but it may be an option you want to look into.
