transmission issues

I recently picked up a 1989 Iroc-z and up till about 2-3 weeks ago all was fine and well... However latley my car wont go into park, and after stomping the brake pedal, and shoving it into park with a good amount of force, I am sucking it up and asking for help. All other gears shift smooth and what not, but park is having some issues. I was thinking it may be a linkage problem, but when it comes to transmissions with me, its more of the blind leading the blind. :banghead: Any help, or input anyone could offer would helping a great deal. Thanks

Sounds like you're dead on correct with a linkage problem. A quick check and to narrow down the possibilities would be to check the linkage on the trans itself for any binding, make sure you have the wheels blocked and parking brake on! If it is sticky there, you could get by with a little lube, or it may be bent. No resolve there, the parking pawl inside the trans maybe the problem, least likely unless someone threw the trans in park while the car was still moving at a good rate of speed.

Overall, chances are it's between the gear selector and the trans likage itself.

Off the wall, are you sure nothing fell into the console and it s blocking the gear selecltor? My wife dumped a soda in there once and it created similar probs.

Thanks I'll take a look at it, and as far as something falling in to console, there is a possibity, but i try to keep it pretty clean. I am normally at a total stop when puttin it in park, but theres the occasional slight roll, but thanks again.

Yeah, I usually keep mine clean too, but one day I got in and the selector was very forceful to move. So I popped console apart to find the sticky goo left over from the soda. She cleaned it all up on the exterior of the console to make it seem like it never happened, this was at night. So in the morning after it had dried up and started to bake from the sunlight it revealed itself, nice try hun.

But I've also seen change fall in there and cause problems as well.

Found, and fixed the problem, it was on the pan where everything mounts up. It was held on by 2 bolts, one was gone, and the other was about to go. thanks for the help
