dye

I had been told by a mechanic a long time ago that there is a dye you add to your radiator and it will show you were there is a leak if you light it with a black light in case no visible leak is present. this will also work if your getting water in your engine and by looking at the spark plugs you cant figure out which one of the heads needs a new gasket. has anyone heard of this, where can I get the dye, what is it called. checked with autozone and checker and they've never heard of that. need to add about half a gallon of coolant every 4-5 months and when start up there is white smoke coming out of the exhaust. Did compression check on all cylinders and compression is fine. visual inspection shows plugs and oil to be fine. change oil every 4-5 months and it is never runny. could one of the back freeze plugs be leaking water into the exhaust system and that causes the white smoke. can't figure problem out.

Help.

ebay (http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=4535943972&category=63703&sspagename=WDVW) is an awsome place... that is, of corse, if that is the dye you are looking for

i've never used dye in the cooling syststem but it works good for oil leaks. what you need is a pressure tester. just so you know every s-10/blazer i've come across with a slow coolant leak that isn't visible has been due to the rad cap not holding pressure. a leak from a freeze plug, block heater, waterpump, rad, heatercore will leave some evidence.

I know NAPA sells the dye around here (PA).one for cooling syastem, oil, and trannies...need a black light to see it though, and when the light hits the leak, it glows. pretty good stuff...good luck

I am in the market for this myself. Watch Ebay and use search for "Tracerline" (a leading mfr) and "UV Leak Detectors". Kits consists of UV lamp, yellow glasses for help in seeing leaks, and various dyes and injectors. You can buy the dyes too, but you will need the lamp and glasses we well. There are some kits on there now ranging from 35-250 bucks depending on what you want to get. I am hoping to get a Traceline kit good for all types of leaks, if I can get a decent deal.
