hey i have a 88 s-10 2.5l manual..
the problem is that it wont start.. or stay running.. one day i ran out of gas filled it up then ran perfect untill i tried to drie it home from a friends.. heres what i have checked and replaced..

replaced all plugs and wires
replaced distributor and the 2 chips under the cap(forget what there called)
replaced the TPS
replaced IACM(idle air control moduel)
checkedfor leaks
checked fule pump/filters
checked all sparks
checked fuel injectors
cleaned gas tank out

tested the cilynders by unpluging 1 at a time to see if it wpould stay running.
now what happens is this. the truck turns over fine, maybe even runs for a few seconds. it will bog up and down very vigerously between 400-2000 rps then stall out.. it sounds like its either getting too much air or too much gas to stall it out and make it run like that but keep in mind this happened out of nowhere.. any1 who can giveinfo pleace do i need this truck to be running thanks!

i had a truck do this to me,it was running perfectly fine and then it just died,i tried everything like you did, and at times it would only idle ruff but soon as you would hit the gas it would bog and die out,my problem was a simple broken ground wire to the engine, seen it rewired it and vola all good

Would run a vacum check make sure you don`t have a serious problem like a bent or burnt valve (check for a abnormal jumping reading). May be run a compression check and make sure you didn`t blow the head gasket, check the color of you oil if it looks milky then you`ve got a big problem. Just simple things to check for before changing anything else. Does it backfire at all? Did you check the fuel pressure regulator or the vacum lines?

I would pull the EGR and clean it as suggested above. I would also double check the fuel pump for pressure. I've been here too. Had to drop the tank and replace the pump.

quick thought.....if the EGR system checks out, along with all other things listed to check, might wanna have a look and see if the cam and crank sensors are ok....along with the other sensors....including O2.....problem with OBD1 and older is finding a scan tool to use without going to the mech's shop.

usually if any of those sensers go bad you will have a check engine light on. but you never know you light might not work. you can go to autozone and get codes read for free. try that. and check feul pressure too, if you ran it out of gas you might have messed up the pump..

hey guys thanks ur help helped me lol.. it does backfire when it tries to die suometimes. but the compression is good and no blown gasgets. the sensers were tested and were working. i had just droped the tank to replace the already new fuel pump and saw that the ground wire was not connected anymore and looked like it was only welded on by a spec of metal i dont think it was ever conected fully. could this b the stupid probelm i didnt see? hopefully anyway.. i havnt put it together yet so not sure if thats it..

if that's the ground for the fuel pump/sending unit, it very well could be....worth trying.

thought autozone only had an OBDII scanner to read codes with....know they sell OBDI scanners/readers, but didn't think they used one on customers cars! cool if they do.

how did you "check" the fuel filter?

It sure sounds like a clogged fuel filter to me. Inasmuch as the problem started after running out of gas, I'd also flush the line from the tank to the filter.
