I recently bought a good lookin', fast moving 96 Tbird. Unfortunately, I'm no Mr. Goodwrench. My friend told my it has a "dual overhead cam." How do I know this and is this typical of this year and model?

In 1996 the TBIRD had a stock 145-hp, 3.8-liter V-6.
Optional powerplant was a 205-hp, 4.6-liter V-8. The V-8 does have overhead cams since 1994, as for dual (two cams per head) I can't say for sure, but I don't see anything on the www indicating that.
Here's some additional data and Specs: (http://research.cars.com/go/crp/optionsAndExtras.jsp?makeid=14&modelid=187&year=1996&myid=&acode=USA60FOC081A0&crpPage=features.jsp&gotopage=optionsAndExtras.jsp&aff=national)
