For those of you keeping score at home...
After $ 961 (with tax) here's what the deal was:
Apparently the tensioner pulley was totally trashed and was what was causing the burning smell-- bearings wasted etc. The shop said they were surprised I didn't lose the timing belt.
What'd I get for the money? Replaced the timing belt and water pump with the idler pulley and the tensioner pulley. Parts all came from Mitsu and broke down like this:
-- Pulleys (2) $ 66.85 each
-- Tensioner $ 185.74
-- T/Belt $ 110.66
-- Wtr. Pump $ 83.50
-- Coolant $ 22.43
Total Parts $ 536.
Labor $ 375 (for five hours)

if you can put that all on yourself you'd save 375 bucks. Anyway, in my old car it took 4 hours to do that with manual tools. No air-hoses.
