Is welfare an option on new cars?

Yogs signature reminded me of something I for some reason hadnt bitched about yet. For years I worked in a grocery store in a crappy part of town and I got to see a wide variety of people. One group of people that really caught my attention were the ones on welfare. Sure there are some people who do work their ass off but arent able to provide enough for their family and for them I think welfare is great. However, there are others that just boggle my mind. There were many, many times when people would come in dressed nice, hair all done, wearing a ton of jewelry, driving a brand new cadillac. They would do their shopping talking on their cell phones laughing having a great time, buying nothing with any nutritional value at all and when they check out what do they pay with? Not the wads of cash they have to flip through, but food stamps. For those of you who dont know food stamps are now done electronicly with cards, after you pay it will print out your remaining balance. For those people I couldnt help but notice how their balance was always an ungodly high ammount. How can these people be on food stamps? These people have more cash in their pockets than half of the people here probably have in savings. Shouldnt something make someone think, "Jim is on food stamps, he is also driving a brand new escalade...something isnt right here."

Simple cases of people exploiting the various systems. Crooks, and these people are crooks, can be very adept at what they do and are very successful. If you recall some more old news there were people that had several identities and collected a welfare check under several bogus names.

Someone on another forum I frequent was bitching about welfare as well. He was caught off guard that someone on welfare was buying a bunch of EXPENSIVE steaks. Doesn't makes sense, but then again I think the majority of people on welfare have no notion of what it means exactly to save money and only buy things that are necessities and not wants. That is probably the biggest reason people stay on welfare.

I've heard of actual situations where these young women have kids FOR the sake of getting more welfare credit.

Fuck that.

We need to force them to do some type of community work, at the very least, in exchange for the welfare. If not cut it off completely.

Some people have the pride of an amoeba, and even less ethics than one.

I've heard of that too. Makes me sick!

Something has to be done. If it wasn't for the great thinkings of Jimmy Carter(i believe is who came up with welfare).

“Give a man a fish; you have fed him for today. Teach a man to fish; and you have fed him for a lifetime”

That's from the bible, whether you believe in God or the bible is irrelevant here. The quote just makes all the sense in the world.

Hell in today's fucked up society that quote is probably seen as not being PC.

My dad works for public housing, and I used to go to work with him once in a while when I was a kid.

Our house had a small tv, no cable, no gaming systems, we wore normal clothes, had a couple pairs of inexpensive shoes, etc.

Walk into an apartment in the projects and you see a 50" tv with two or three gaming systems hooked up to it, but turned off because they're watching playboy or HBO, a $2000 shoe collection in the corner, a few expensive starter coats, a couple cartons of cigarettes on the table, a fridge full of beer...

And it doesn't end there. You know these people can't pay medical bills, so we're payin all that too. And as they get older, it's only getting more expensive. Then you have normal people, who bust their asses and save for retirement so they can afford their own health insurance, and all the money they should be saving for retirement is being used to support these low-lifes.

I used to think they had their priorities screwed up- but I know better now. They're just taking what they can get. It's the rest of us who support this bullshit that have our priorities mixed up.

One thing that a lot of people don't know about the projects- lots of inbreeding. It ain't just a hillbilly thing! :icon16:

Where agency does your dad work for? I work for Emphasys (www.emphasysworld.com (http://www.emphasysworld.com)) which provides software for public housing. Needless to say, it means that I've got access to a lot of raw data around those places. There are people playing the system all the time.

If anyone has the time, stop in at HUD and see the absolute mess their regulations are. Its almost as bad as the IRS. You want welfare and/or foodstamps? Save a bunch of money. Get fired from your job. Make sure you have your money saved under someone elses name for at least three months (not in the household you'll be applying for welfare on) a brother or sister is usually a good choice. Fill in your application. Claim nothing. If they check your information, they'll see you have nothing. Assisance will be yours. Now you want to buy something? Just have the person you're saving your money with give you the cash you need. Buy what you want and just watch the checks and foodstamps keep on coming in. It happens all the time.

My dad used to work for CMHA (Cincinnati Metropolitan Housing Authority) I too have heard all the stories of people with luxuries that you or I would never realistically be ablt to obtain. plus, they have the uncanny habit of filing false claims, saying that the maintenance people steal from them, and remove the few little 20's that they had just sitting out on the counter. Most of these claims, are/were poorly investigated, that they were just given compensation.

and now, I work in a jail. I see countless people coming in and out of my facility, that when asked where they work, they always say unemployed, and they are wearing brand name clothes, shoes, lots of jewelry. then they come, and drop down 250-500 for bail.... and then come back a few days later, and bail someone else out.

one thing we do, is ask how many dependants they have, typically the answer is 3-4 kids. Just like Yogs is saying, playing the system is a huge thing.

I remember just a little over a year ago when they had the riots in Benton Harbor (I live like 15-20 minutes from there). Benton Harbor is a rundown city with at least 80% of the population African American and living in poverty. Drugs are a HUGE problem. Well anyways, back to the riots. A sheriff's deputy noticed two motorcycles racing at 80+ mph. He started chasing one of them at speeds of over 120 mph. The motorcycle then went into a residential neighborhood at speeds of 60-70 mph, when he lost control, crashed into a house and died. The residents were accusing the police officer of purposefully crashing into the motorcycle, but they showed the video from the cruiser on TV, and the officer did NOT hit the motorcycle. Well anyways, for 3-4 days and nights the residents were on the streets protesting, rioting, setting houses on fire, vandalizing cars, etc. They caused millions of dollars worth of damage. And guess what they wanted? They wanted the government to invest millions more into their wellfare programs.

I once conducted a job interview with a seemingly nice young lady. She met all of our qualifications and I was quite impressed with her credentials. We needed somebody....and she appeared to fill the bill. I offered her a job. She proceded to inform me that she really didn't want a job. She was just doing the interview process to fulfill the obligation to continue her unemployment checks. I was frosted. I immediately contacted the ESC and before you know it she was calling to change her mind. She was ready to accept a job offer. I was so sorry to inform her that the job was no longer on the table. Lazy bitch.

Well done, Bagwan.

Welfare: another government program that, while well intended, has been abused.

I think the folks that are collecting but not entitled should be jailed.

Having worked numerous jobs behind cash registers in the past, I've seen the blatant abuse of the system as well. Scenario 1: Food stamp card is used to buy food, because that's all you can do with it. So of course, that means the person doesn't have the money for food, right? Wrong. They have the money for food, it just goes into a friggin' 30-rack of Bud and carton of Marlboro's. They can't afford to keep food on the table without the government's assistance, yet they have no problem supporting their stupid cigarette addiction and gluttonous beer-belly. Scenario 2: EBT cards. Talk about giving these losers carte blanche to abuse the hell out of the system. "I'll just buy this here food on someone else's bill, take out an extra $20, and grab myself a DVD as well. Because it's a crime to let that home theater system of mine go to waste. Thanks taxpayer!" I sometimes couldn't help but feel that I was paying THEM to come through MY line.

The assistance systems have always meant well, but I think they need to be revamped, and those who abuse them need to be handed prison sentences. Maybe a year or two in the lockup, with nothing but HBO, free healthcare, 3 square meals, library/college access, and physical-wellness facilities will teach the a thing or two. :eek7:

I think the lockup should be a 6'x6' cell with a toilet and water.

I wonder how many of these people would have found a job and been legit if welfare and public housing had never been available.

Where agency does your dad work for?

He works for one of the county housing authorities in the Chicago suburbs.

Probably all of them.

I heard a radio interview this morning, this guy just got here from another country 4 weeks ago, speaks broken English, and has 3 jobs. There are jobs out there, people just want to ride the system.

The biggest abusers of taxpayers' welfare money are the civil servants who administer it.the departments that handle such benefits in this country have become steadily larger and better-furnished, despite the figures for unemployment falling to an all time low.Whereas 15 years ago it was neccesary for the unemployed to report in and sign an affadavit that they had not worked since their last payment, the department now simply direct credits their bank accounts. The system relies on private reporting of welfare abuse and computer tracking of tax payments.Since the average welfare abuser is more likely to be working for 'under the table' payments, he's unlikely to get caught paying income tax on it.

There will always be those who milk the system, but by far and away the worst offenders are the idle buggers that administer the system for us. Instead of spending their time catching welfare cheats, they are being jetted around the country for 'training sessions','conferences','team building exercises','cultural awareness seminars' and whatever other rackets they can dream up.Here's the heads up.We pay taxes to ensure that the needy get looked after, and the garbage gets hauled away.If the garbage men did their jobs as badly as the welfare department do, we'd be knee deep in shit in no time.Perhaps it's time to promote a few good workers from REAL community services into the dreamy world of welfare. At least then the cuklture of mediocrity might get challenged.

So true, but an additional point that needs to be made is that the civil servants that administer the programs are staggering under a too-heavy workload and getting paid far too little for the service they provide. They don't have enough time to track down the cheaters, and if they did the draconian process would make it nearly impossible for the cheater to be prosecuted, the penalty would be minor, and they'd be applying under a new name or in a new jurisdiction in no time, still working the system instead of working.
