Check Engine Light

My 94 ES300 will not start. It turns over really good but it sounds like it is not getting any gas. I'm told that since my check engine light is not coming on at the first turn of the ignition it will never start. How do I get my check engine light on? Is that the problem?

Car cranking, but not starting could be for numerous reasons.
Simplest - no gas. Other reasons - blown ignition or other fuse, Ignition coil wire disconnected, clogged gas filter, timing belt, etc.
