Aftermarket MAF sensor for 4.6

Hi folks,

I have a 94 Thunderbird LX with the 4.6L V-8. Last week the check engine light came on, so I took it to the shop and had them put it on the computer. The MAF sensor is shot.

The mechanic suggested to go with a genuine FoMoCo replacement sensor. The shop is at the local community college (he's actually one of the instructors), so I know he's not trying to sell me parts. The sensor is around $280, he said.

However, when I was doing an internet search, I discovered there were aftermarket MAF sensors that claim to increase horsepower. Is anyone familiar with these? I have seen them in the $150 range, so if I could increase my horsepower, get a reliable sensor, and save a c-note in the process, what's not to like? Comments? Recommendations would be appreciated, too.

I would guess the mechanic has cheap aftermarket replacement parts in mind when he recommends Ford manufacture, not performance parts.

Thanks in advance,

Dan

An aftermarket MAF sensor, by itself, will not increase horsepower.
You would need to reprogram the computer with an aftermarket MAF sensor, which would run a couple of hundred dollars.
I suggest to go with a stock unit.

Thanks, James. That is the impression I'm getting. Appreciate the reply.

Go stock unless your going to upgrade a lot at once.
