To become a moderator, you have to go through the Ritual.

Muahahahaha:devil:

See you there.

Cut off your best friend's penis and you'll become a moderator, guaranteed!!!

J/K :D:D:D

I became a mod just by being online for like, 5 hours a day at least, posting lots, and acting mature and helping to control people. That was back before AF was this big though, it might be a little tougher now. Don't give up though! :D

Moderating is tough, responsibility is needed.

Heep

That's true. You can't just put AF at the back of your mind if you're a mod.

Sounds like you have experience....enlighten us :D

Who, me? I have owned and moderated several boards at ezBoard.com (became inactive and were shut down however). We had a good 1000 members (one of the largest for a ezboard). But now I just want to post and mind my own business. There is too much politics in moderating (sometimes).

Heh, I agree with you there. But AF has a fairly large moderator base, and that really helps to split up responsibilities and make life easier for us :D

Oh I am sure it probably does. But I am getting away from that now, I find it too demanding for myself. I see sometimes when you become a mod you drift from posting great posts, and I dislike that entirely.

I never understood the whole Moderating thing except the fact that you control what is said and who it is said too. Is their a limit to how many moderaters we can have? I've seen about 20 on this board.

Out of that 20, how many are active? and how many forums are there?

That may be true for other forums, but I've noticed that the AF moderators have plenty to say, much of which is not only informative, but inquisitive as well.

And there are plenty of forums that don't have anybody to be the moderator yet, while some have 4 or 5.

morpheus- In a lot of the forums I have been in, it really does affect it. Some develop ego's some, just post BS. Either way it goes down hill. I am currently moderating at another forum and I attempt to stay from it (my forum I mean).

Well no doubt about that Dino. It's primarily the junk that I see from the moderators that drive me away from those specific sites.

In a few forums, moderators do only what is a necessity: moderating. Quite a shame really, considering the fact that they cannot spend their time sharing information. Instead they must powertrip and not become a real part of the community. Respectable, but nevertheless, unfortunate.

It not only deprives the mod IMO it also deprives the people gaining knowledge. Like in my sig, thought is the greatest power, and should be attainable by any. And if you are just going to sit around waiting for someone to flame another user, then you might as well leave. I don't have a problem with higher mod counts, but IMO it can be lowered 50%.

Well, if I can interject for a minute, I just wanna say my 2 cents. I understand wholeheartedly what eveyone is saying. However, I am a moderator and often chat with everyone and share information on here. I'm pretty sure that you will notice that, at least in AF, the mods answer questions and often participate in activities here quite often. This is good cuz it keeps the forum active and quite peaceful in a sense. Please feel comfortable in asking any moderators or even the owner, Igor, any questions that you feel they can help you with. We try not to portray an image of Moderators are the governing powers and you must tremble before us attitude, at least not me. I try to help and entertain whenever possible. I don't dictate but I do keep close to my responsibilities. Thank you guys for being a part of AF and feel free to express you opinions.:D

TREMBLE BEFORE ME!!! :evillaugh :evillaugh

j/k :D

I find that most of the moderators here are just normal members until something needs fixing, then they take control. I don't consider myself or other mods better than anyone, anyone on this site, we've just - usually - been here longer and have gained more responsibilities and priviledges. That in no way takes away from the content and amount I post, however. I just act like a regular member.

I couldn't have put it better. Most mods are the most active members on this board. I don't know what happens "behind the scenes" cause I'm just the audience, I don't have a comment on the mod's performance or decision making.

This board's moderators are pretty cool. At another board I sometimes frequent, they get all pissy when you post things in the wrong category. Here they just move it. Cool :)

I wonder what type of chaos would be unleashed if there were more moderators than average joes in this forum.

Actually it probably wouldn't change much. You guys are all pretty mellow, which is a good thing. :)

I can tell you right now. Because of a moderator to member ratio is overstocked (in the moderator direction) it will cause chaos. But what chaos? Well the members would want power. They see John Doe get it, why not them? That will cause the initial rift. Some will threaten to go elsewhere, and I bet some do. Thats your loss of members. The people who are the mods develop egos to counterattack the frustrated members. Thats when the Admin. has lost control. But then again, turbulence like that is unpredictable, I wouldn't say what I stated will happen, it might happen.

Screw the theories, let's make it happen! Then we would need some sort of dictator-like supermod to control the vast number of nobles who have begun to run rampant in the AF kingdom. I guess Igor would become our ruler, and our jobs as normal mods would be to squish the little peons who bother us!

Just thinking out of my wastegate... ;)

A dictator is the worst way to go. Power goes to his head, and he thinks he can do what he wants b/c he is king. People get hurt in some way shape or form and it just gets really messy. Anyone who dictates a messageboard should not be running it. And thats not opinion either, thats fact.
