Tossing Salad

Why is it called tossing the salad? I can't seem to get an answer on this one.

Well, because when you make a proper tossed salad, you add all the ingredients, then take a serving fork in one hand, and a serving spoon in the other, and ever so gently plucking some salad betwixt them, you gently toss them in the air, and repeat untill the salad is mixed uniformly. And look what you made me do. You made me post-whore.

Because you toss it in the air to mix it all up. :p :D

In my opinion, a lot of people think too much of having their salad tossed. I mean they appreciate it, but prefer it to go untouched.
