Neutral Safety Switch

I have a 77 Firebird that we've done a swap from a Chevy 305 with a TH350 to a Pontiac 400 with a TH400. The problem we ran into is that we can't hook up the rod that runs from the transmission to the neutral safety switch on the steering column. The car now has Hooker headers on it and it causes problems for routing the rod.
We need to find a way to hook up a switch to prevent the car from being started in any other gear than park. Track regulations require this for racing.
Has anyone wired anything up to prevent starting the car in gear without the rod being connected?

id do some kinda wiring from the park light through the ignition wire, like a relay
if that doesnt work just attach a switch and some flashing lights and say that thats the safety!
lol
