Inconsistant Sputter

I have a 94 Altima GXE, 5 Speed, with 148000 miles on it. Sometimes when I drive it, it performs fine, other times, it will hesitate heavily on accelleration, no matter how much gas you give it. It goes, but very slowly, and it jerks slightly but enough to notice it. No consistancy at all, most of the time it will even go from running bad to running good, or vis versa, in the same trip. I hear a clicking coming from the timing chain once the car has reached operating temp and the RPM settles to 650 or so. Does anyone know anything about the timing chain tensioner? Is this a possibility? Any help would be great!

my daughter had this same thing at the beginning before her car finally broke down. It worked fine some times and others it would hesitate~ This went on for a few months at least~ We eventually found out it was a bad O ring letting oil seep into the distributor~ she needed to get a new one

With mine, the spark plug boots pop up out of the head and i lose a cylinder. When i first got it the boot would go up and down causing an inconsistant run. Its only come out on me twice so I just keep pulling over and pushing them back in. You probably would have noticed this yourself but I just thought i'd mention it if you havn't.
