I am trying to replace the multi-function lever (turn signal, cruise control & wipers) on my 1988 astro. I have both a chiltons manual (nothing mentioned at all on this) and a haynes manual which says after placing the transmission in low gear, place lever in right turn position and just pull it straight out. But to no avail , I am afraid I am going to break somewthing doing it this way. Any help?

Make sure that the wipers are in the off position there is a metal tang on the end of the lever that fits in a slot on the switch inside the column. It does just pull out with some resistance, just use a firm steady pull.
NOTE: There are wires attached to the lever for the cruise control unplug it under the dash and attach a piece of mecanics wire to the end of it before you pull it through, then attach the wire to the new switch and pull the new wire back through, if you don't it will be very difficult to get the wire back inside the column
