I'm looking to give the s13 a new paint job, the paint was laid good by whoever painted it the first time they just didn't take the time to cut in the door jams, hatch, behind tail lights masked along windows, engine bay ect. I am going to pull the engine pull bumpers fenders doors hatch glass and everything to try and get a perfect or near perfect color change on the car. My question is, how much paint should I buy to get that much coverage?

wow... that will take a big bite out of your wallet.

It would depend what kind of paint your using... number of coats and the varieties...
white is the cheapest for obvious reasons... if you want some fancy metallic color then you would need more paint for the layers etc...

$6k!!!! thats if u want a prefessional finish, right, and for the whole car.
For my car, i have a silver-gold color, to me its cool (i got a different color on two of my parking citations, one said silver and the other gold, lol) Anyways, for two of my fenders, the lights and part of the right door, the paint, base, etc. cost me $100, its dupont, but im not gonna do a professional paint job. But at least it will match and not show much difference. My friend told me a reg paint job will cost you $1k.

well you can go cheap with paint but it won't last you long and it won't look as good as you want it to.. the labour is whats gonna kill you.. taking the engine out and all that.. doors aren't as bad cause they're not hard to take apart.. but my buddy got his corrado vr6 quoted to $8000CDN, taking everything out of the engine bay and getting a professional paint job done.. you could probably get away with that job for maybe 4 or 5k but the paint wouldn't be the same.. a paint job can cost anywhere from 1000 for stripping the body and repainting it to 6000 for taking the engine out, stripping the body, engine bay and doors, priming everything and repainting with maybe 3 layers of paint, 2 of clearcoat and a sealant.. depends on how durable you want it to be

The killer is the prep work, all that filling and sanding and taking stuff apart, and after the paint job you gotta wet sand which is a bitch and all that, so D-Bo's price seems about right.

All of these post and my question never got answered. I am gett a pro paint job with bake/down draft booth for cost of paint, I just want to go ahead and start pricing my paint. I have a friend that is going to a "trade school" here locally to paint and has been for 2 years and they can't charge for labor just materials. soo... lucky me :) once again how much paint? I got to talk to him today and he said about a gallon should cover it. I do think I'm going to go back w/ the dayton blue it is very pretty color.

yea painting a car is relatively easy, its just tedious work. Jams are easy. The glass and engine are the bitch parts. Is your roof black? or you painting it blue also? All i have to say is "keep sanding". When you think your done, do it again lol. Thats what every boss has told me. I usually sand till my fingers bleed, then stop or tape them up. Makes for leather like skin though.

???...my uncle is a painter. Iv only painted 2 cars in my life. A pt cruiser and a mustang. He was teaching me the feel of the gun and what different tips do and all teh weird ass shit. Other than that im the prepper. Sand sand and more sand. If i ever get around to doing exterior mods on my car ill paint them myself as a learning tool of course with his supervision so everything is tip top. We just take all the materials from the shop lol...all i have to do is buy paint. So i technically could paint my hole car for like 300 bux for primer, paint, hardeners, and clear. Taking off labor and materials is basically where all the cost is coming from. So the DIY is definantly the cheapest route. Obviously, thats how it is for anything though.

mine used to have so many colors when i got my silvia front end. from the doors back it was red. the hood was cf, fenders were dark green and the bumper was black. it was so badass

you could always tear the car completely down, pull the body from the frame, and have it all tanked. probably cost about 2K. But with that, and the cost of paint and supplies, youre still looking at only $3000 - 3500....DIY paint.

Thats the approach I'm looking at on my 240. It'll also gimme the change to paint the frame, do the RHD conversion, and all that fun stuff.

True but for $400 or less I can buy enough daytona blue paint to paint the car inside and out and do a perfect job, so $400 to 3,000 is a BIG difference. and my $400 paint job will be every bit as effective as boiling the car down for the most part. Little bit of sand goes a long way's when useing a sand blaster and once that's all done prime each pannel block sand prim again little mor block sand and nice clean new paint

eh, true. but it all just depends on circumstances. I'm sure you've got a bigger shop to work with. when I start working on my stepdads 68 beetle, I'll probably sandblast it. But considering I'm not just doing the body, but the frame too on the 240 (or at least planning on it), I'm gonna tank it.
