Hey Guys... I've done some research, but I haven't been able to get "good" feedback on pros/cons to the 924. So I was wondering if you guys in the porche community would be able to help me. I've got a 93 Probe (as mentioned in my sig.). Its been my car for a while now, and I'm looking for an upgrade. I saw a 1987 Porsche 924 S Coupe 2D 5 spd manual, lthr, mroof nice, only 117k... that's all i got from it.. I'm going to check it out some time this week, but I thought i'd ask what should i be conscience about? Its going for $3k. I can easily sell my probe for $3,200, but I know my probe will run for another 40-50k miles no problem, so I'm also looking for something that can be just as reliable. I gonna guess for that price, something's wrong with the car and that some repairs will be necessary... How much would I have to drop on top of the sell price to do basic repairs? (ie: tune up, clutch, water pump, timing belt, etc...) I'm trying to get a feel for this car's unique pros/cons before i get into it.

Thank you for all your responses! I'll check out the car and give a further reply later!

The big ticket items are the clutch and the water pump. Get any records if they have them. The 944 I bought just bought for parts has 257K on it and the only reason I got it was that the guy slid into a guard rail and the insurance would pay for it. So my point being your 924S has plenty of life left in it.

okay.. WELL... The car has been repainted... I can see where there was quite a bit of rust on the body under the paint coating (random rough and uneven spots in the car pannel...) The whole interior is shot to hell. The engine seems to run "perfectly". I didn't notice hardly any flaws... (except acceleration is slower than my probe >_<) Idles fine at about 800rpms. Gas Guage is inconsistant (constantly moving between 1/4 and 1/2 tank line) Milage was about 120,000 miles. Right power window doesn't work. Took the car up to 120mph just to check stability, and it seemed to some "free play" in the steering after about 80 mph... Steering was kinda bouncier than my probe on the highway while just cruisin at 80, got even worse as i went faster (durrr :P) I'm not sure if thats just areo dynamics or if the suspension is just old. I think rear struts were replaced for one reason or another though... T-top was a bit tricky to get off as the electronic motors that release the back end are probably old. No rust on the undercarriage. Seems to me the clutch was very heavy (but this is the first porsche i've ever driven so I dunno if that's normal compared to "low end" sports cars...) Shifting was average. Not factory smooth but not too rough. headlights work, everything checks okay. No leaks from what I can tell... Hood release latch is broken (had to take a screwdriver to it...) Whatcha guys think for 3 grand?

7-years later, I bought a 1987 PORSCHE 924S/RED//120K miles for $3K, it's been sitting in a NC garage for the last 10-years.

Bad/Good - The Clutch is bad. see AF www.automotiveforums.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=1083235 (http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=1083235)
Bad Power steering high pressure side hose, the oil contamination on a rubber clutch probably didn't help the life of a clutch.

Grades 1-10, and 10 is the being best.

Engine/Manual Tran - 8 (120k) ''Needs new clutch''
Body - 10
Paint - 8
Interior - 8
Tires - 5
