I have 2 friends that have gone 4- 500,000 kilometres on the motor... though the tranny blew on them...one guy twice....the other guy once....The have 2001 and 2003 models...Mine is a 2001 Silvy, Extended 5.3 V8 4x4...I have driven so far 90, 000 kilometres... however, it feels like my tranny is to slipping, but I could be wrong...It is very minimal.... My engine has piston slap...so I ain't know what's going to happen there either....My rear end has to be rebuilt, I think it's about to be become a mixture of fine metal pieces, and 80W90....Anyways, the best truck out there no matter what people say.....

i had piston slap in the morning on my 5.3 with 100,00 miles on it and i switched to mobile one synthetic10w40...it seems to have made the piston slap go away, or it is very minimal.

220+k miles on my 99 Silverado. Orinigal motor (5.3 L) and auto transmission. No problems on either during this time. I had the normal ABS pump failure around 50k miles and I just replace a wheel bearing but nothing else.

Been a good truck for me.

I got almost 2,000 miles on my original motor and trans. no problems yet. Which is good because I still owe $ 24,000 of $37,000 on it.

My dad had a '84 silverado with a 305... he wound up getting a little better than 700,000 miles on the engine (with NO internal work done to it) before it died. That spanned about 4 transmissions, though.

160,000 miles both tranny and motor, rebuilt rear end, 1 wheel bearings, brakes of course but not till over 120,000, but this here was the most pain in the ass cost more for this than rebuilding the rear end the cat convertors which is one piece $500. OK now who doesnt have the piston slap?

My Crank seal dumped at 24,000 miles and now at 35,000 miles, there is a LOUD engine knock at start-up in the morning. Goes away after 1-2 minutes, but it sounds like a rod. Goes to the Dealer on Monday. We'll see.....

I took my '02 2500HD in yesterday to change the drive train fluids. Never had a problem with the engine or tranny before. But after changing the filter yesterday, something happened that apparently blew the pump in the tranny.

I just turned 190,000 on my 2000 4.8 ECSB with original motor and tranny. Rear end has been changed and brakes, but that's about it. Piston slap in the morning, and the fuel pump whines and gauge reads wrong, but that is being fixed shortly. I am going to drive this truck until the wheels fall off. It is paid for and I am trying to pay off student loans first then new truck next.

If I might ask, how much did that run you, and do you do a lot of towing?

silverado122775
08-09-2006, 12:36 PM
about $2000 with labor.. the rear-end itself was about $1350.. axle's not included.. I was lucky enough not to need to buy those..
I do not tow all the time.. but the truck as worked it's ass off numerous of times.
It was really weird.. I starred hearing a loud bang with a jault when making left turns.. first it was not all the time but got gradually worse pretty quick.. I took it in to a friend's friend. (to make a long story short) it finally busted when they tried to get it to the dealership. They quoted me $3200. The dealership will not replace the whole rear-end.. they insisted on buying each part separetly. So I took it to another place who recommended the Jasper rear-end.

At 39,000 miles I lost all gears except 1st. and 2nd. No reverse, no nothing.

Chevy made me pay about half of the $1200 repair.

Motor is strong... Mobil 1 every 3-5K miles

Another reason why it pays to find a reputable mechanic that can do quality work for much less than the dealership.

On the rearend, do you still have the same gear ratio, or did you change that?

silverado122775
08-11-2006, 11:52 AM
I wanted to, but then I would have to change the front as well. but I did not have the extra $$. The option I almost went for was to go with a POSI rear end. but again that cost extra $$ too. only an extra $200, but it was still too much for me. I know I will kick myself in the a#% later for it. LOL

I didn't even think about that!! Sorry, I was thinking in a 4x2 dimension! I have thought about maybe changing the gearing on the rear to make it better for towing, since I only have the 3.42's, but I wasn't even sure of the cost involved.

just about 135k on mine.its an 01 4.8L.i think its been about 10k now since i had to replace the tranny.it never leaked, slipped or showed any signs of weakness.all i was doin was backin out of a parking spot one day and BANG, i lost reverse and apparently OD.the guy said it was so bad he had to cut the guts out with a torch, he couldnt just remove them.now its sittin in the yard where i dumped it off my friends trailer 2 weeks ago tonight.im pretty sure its the fuel pump.i cant afford to replace that right now, so i been ridin around wit my girlfriend in her sentra.if any of u have experienced this then u know how demeaning that can be.im hoping one of u will be moved with pity and give me a sending unit hahaha.altogether the trucks not bad, but i will say this.people laughed at me for spending $1000 on my rusty, beat lookin 76.but i bolted on a carb and replaced the timing set in a weekend and drove it from VA to NJ.in a year the truck never left me sittin.i sold it for $300 cuz my parents thought it was ugly in the yard. :banghead:http://files.automotiveforums.com/gallery/watermark.php?file=/503/33581576small.jpg

Just replaced the water pump, other than that only work done on it was to replace both lower ball joints.
Ashamed to say that the transmission has never even had the filter changed.

You can spend about $200 or more to change out the gearing.. just make sure it is want you want to do. 3:73's are a good overall ratio. 4:10's are good if you need the torque, but could start to suffer gas millage.

i've got 130,000 on my 2003 4.8, silvy....original engine, original tranny, and even original brakes.....I change the oil every 5 or 6k...with Mobil clean 5000...i'm getting nervous about the tranny fluid though...I've heard once you go over 100,000 miles it's best just to leave the fluid alone...was thinking about doing a fluid change but not flushing out the system...seems that flushing causes all the problems.

I have heard that too. what could happen is that it could cause leaks, but they would go away after the fluids settle in.
