Engine Starting Problem

Ok so heres what happens. I get in my truck, and attempt to start it. As I turn the key it tries to start, but most of the time I have to depress the gas pedal just enough for it to start. On days that its been cold in the morning, it sometimes will just start up. I took a bottle of the Techron Concentrate system cleaner from Chevron and ran it on the highway, but to no luck it still has trouble starting. Wondering if one of my injectors is clogged or if maybe fuel pump is having problems. I have a 98' Chevrolet 1500, and have changed the fuel pump about 2 yrs. ago.
Wondering what it could be.

Also for forgot to add, that have changed all plugs and wires. This was done before problem occured--- for routine maintenance.

FPR (fuel pressure regulator) I almost guarantee it.

i know this is a bonehead question...but exactly where is the fuel pressure regulator at on a 98' chevy 1500.

I have trouble remembering what's where on every vehicle, so here's a good way to find it on any vehicle. It will be on the fuel line from the pump. It will have a vacuum line going into it. There will be two lines coming out of it, one to the fuel rails/TBI the other is the return line back to the tank.

Actually, I don't believe you will be able to see it from the outside. It's a Vortec motor right? Should be located inside the intake manifold, under the plastic. It sits directly next to the fuel injector spider assembly. You need to get yourself a fuel injection pressure tester and find out what your pump is putting out at different temps. Changed your fuel filter lately? The only other thing that it could be is that the computer needs to be updated for a driveability issue. Check with the dealer to see if you have any computer updates available that might cure your warm weather start problem. -Chris

He's right it's under the plastic (actually mylar) upper intake manifold. Here's an easy way to test it without the fancy equiptment. slightly pinch the return fuel line with needle nose vise grips. this restricting the flow causing fuel meter body to have backpressure. If it starts fine when doing this its defineatley FPR.I would not do this if you have any way to get proper tool. I recommend using the presure guage at the test port and observe pressure drop when fuel pump is shut down. You can over ride the fuel pump relay at the under hood fuse box. There is a little red lead w/ a female connector going to nothing at the back side of fuse/relay box. This is there for the sole purpose of dianostics- running the fuel pump without running engine.

:biggrin: Thanks to all who helped me on this one. Replaced the fuel pressure regulator and my truck runs like shes new again. Must say one thing though. I did also have to replace the o-ring around the fuel meter, where the fuel injectors plug in underneath the Intake Manifold. I hope you changed the large o-ring type gasket that mates the lower and upper intake manifold, If you didn't and it sealed again you got very lucky. I would think you had to buy the felpro gasket kit for upper intake R & R.Glad it's working again, good job!
