Very weird steering squeek

Ok,
my 99 silvy has developed a strange squeak when i turn the steering wheel left or right. It sounds like a gear grinding or rubber squeaking. Is there something in the steering assembly that can be greased? Or some kind of gear to go bad and cause the squeaking/whining noise when i turn? I dont have any of the vibration or "clunk" other silvy owner's complain of, just this really annoying sound... anybody know what to do?

thanks,
jerry

grease all the balljoints & other steering stuff. most times it's the lower balljoints that squeak. you should also check them for play by jacking each wheel off the ground by the controll arm. try prying the wheel up& down and shacking the tire from top to bottom. a little up & down in the lowers is alowed but no side to side and no movement in the uppers.

I've got a real annoying squeak coming from my front end too....i'm gonna check the ball joints tomorrow if the weather stays good....
Any specific pointers on greasing the ball joints...like are there grease fittings or do i need to spray some white lithium or silicon lubricant in there?

simple just grease, but raise your truck so the wheels are off the ground first.

Sorry to bring back this really old thread, but I needed a little more info. My truck makes a sick metal on metal rubbing noise when I turn, but only when I turn left. I greased all 11 or 12 fittings per the Chilton manual but it didn't solve the problem. It almost seems like the squeak is coming from the steering column before it gets to the intermediate shaft. Anyone experience this problem? It's been getting worse, and it is driving me nuts. Also, it seems the sound is sometimes accompanied by my belt squeaking about once a revolution during the turn.

Thanks,
Jeb

I have the same problem too. It's almost like a bushing in the steering problem that needs grease. The problem rarely occurs, but when it does it is when the steering wheel is turned quickly to the right or left. The sound is definitely coming from the column; not the ball joints, etc.

I have this very same problem with my '99 but to me it sounds like the power steering pump, when "loaded" or has a strain on it, is sweaking. I've already checked belts, ball joints, intermediate shaft. This is my best guess now. Let me know if any of you GM Techs have heard of this.
