I believe you are talking about the project that was mentioned in the press, with some artist's concept sketches that seemed to look like a cross between a Gallardo and an Esprit. If so, they were just speculation on what the car might have looked like, not actual drawings from McLaren.

Unfortunately, I have read that the project has been canceled. It sounded wonderful, a return to Gordon Murray's core principles, with updated technology. All at a reasonable price, too (well, reasonable by McLaren standards).

It seems that Gordon Murray was not happy with how things went during the SLR project (he had pretty much given up project control towards the end, because the final product was so far from his stated ideals). Mercedes Benz, being the parent company with a majority stake in McLaren, nixed the idea, claiming that the car would be straddling the market for several of its own offerings, and would probably eat into those models' sales. Bummer.

Also, if its the image I'm thinking of, it was done by a UK magazine based loosely on some Audi "le mans" quattro concept car pics. Pure pie in the sky stuff

I have seen both posted on other web forums being hailed as the "New McLaren" :grinno:

there was a "baby mclaren" announced in UK car magazine autocar a while ago, then announced it was scrapped.

but recently i think the plans were re-anounced, i can maybe dig out and scan the article if anyone is interested???

That would be interesting. I know GM had a falling out with the Mercedes team, so I would not be surprised if he went back to what he does best, working alone in a sort of "skunk works" manner. I don't know that Mercedes would permit this to be done under the official McLaren name, though. Post the article if you can find it, thanks!

there was a project being investigated with mclaren, making a sort of mercedes answer to porsche 911 t, ferrari 430, gallargo and amv8... it was named p109 iirc, but the latest is that it's cancelled.. so that's about it.. and it was in autocar magazine (www.autocarmag.com)

Yeah thats right, it was in autocar.

I remember them cancelling it, but thought i read somethihng in there recently about a relaunch, maybe i'm confusing myself.

If any non-UK forum members are interested, let me know and i wills can it what I have. I have all the issues from last 2 years somewhere!!!

Personally, even if there is a grain of truth to it, I think the pics are pure BS. Seeing how the SLR turned out, I know GM will never lend his name to anything that looks more Merc and less Mac.

But here's some info:
http://www.autoweek.com/news.cms?newsId=102138

From www.jalopnik.com

AutoWeek is reporting Project P8, a new, supercar collaboration between Mercedes-Benz and McLaren, reported on hold some months ago, will be taken over by McLaren and brought to market (a very expensive market, indeed). Although Mercedes has severed ties to the project, which is reportedly in the testing phase, the V8-powered, mid-engined sports car will be built alongside the Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren in England and cost around $200,000 — a mere farthing compared to the SLR’s $500,000 price tag.

I've managed to dig out the article, and it uses pics that you mention above.

It is the article when the car was first announced, with Mercedes on board. Personally, I am glad that Mercedes are no longer on board if this project will go ahead, perhaos it will allow GM to be proud to lend is name to the project....

Interesting. I don't quite know what to make of it...whether to believe that such a project exists, whether it's a good thing or a bad thing, etc., etc. I mean, it sounds like a Gallardo, but more money. And we know it's not going to look anything like the artist's sketches. And if GM went towards a minimalist extreme, then I doubt he could surpass the Hulme concept that was unveiled in New Zealand a short while ago.

So what is this car, where does it sit in relation to others on the market today, looks-, price-, and performance-wise? Seems pointless, but I am glad that there's more variety in the market.

There are some weared things going on apprentily this car is already in testing so watch out for spy shots. There is also talk that the new Lotus Esprit will be powered by the SLR engine its suposidily also in testing alongside an SLR and the engine notes are said to be very similar weared. I do hope McLaren arent overdoing it i know they have that big factroy and the SLR would go on selling forever but well lets hope there not overstraching.

I think it looks too much like a Mercedes (back end, anyway). They should redo the styling and make it look more like the original F1, not an SLR. I know that McLaren and Mercedes are teamed up, but I think that it should be restyled.
