I also have the white stuff on the underside of the oil cap. Is there an easy way for me to tell which one of the gaskets (upper or lower) is bad? Also can someone point me to instructions on how to change the upper and or lower out. I know I have come across them on this forum before. If someone else knows where they are might you attach the link to your reply.
I hope it is the upper since it appears to be less work, but most of the posts that I read about point to the lower.
Thanks in advance for your help.

Don't waste your time figuring out if it's the upper or lower intake gasket...it's always the lower that goes bad on these.

The lower is the only one that has coolant going through it. The upper is basically just a paper gasket with rubber around it to stop air leaks. They rarely go bad. Make sure when you go and buy the new gaskets that you get the revise version. They have small cylinders of metal around the outside bolt holes that stop you from torquing the bolts to tight and breaking them.
As far as instructions go spend $15 and get the haynes manual for the 99-00 Aleros and Grand Ams. I has a nice walk through and is very detailed.

I already have the haynes manual and yes its instructions are fairly thorough, but I do recall someone else posting a fairly detailed list of instructions for the gasket change out. If anyone can find this please post the link as a reply.
Thanks
