CAI Vs. Short Ram Intake

Which gives your more out of your engine if you want to go the n/a route...a CAI or Short Ram Intake? I guess I'm looking for more HP and more response from my engine. *duh* :icon16:
Also...I see these small breather filters...different colors and such. What are those for? I don't see anywhere in my engine (except for my CAI filter) where a filter would even go. Thanks! :iceslolan

if you want most you can get out of an intake... go cold air intake
a short ram is still in the engine bay, sucking in hot(ter) air than compared to the cai which is pulling in cold(er) air from low in the wheel well
with a cold air intake
jus dont drive in big puddles and youll be fine...
if you do youll run the risk of sucking up water and hydrolocking your engine.. and that sucks

How effective are the AEM bypass valves for combating hydrolock?

yeah... i found this out the hard way... but it doesn't always get hydrolocked, mine could still drive!!!

Would this be the case if you used a hood scoop or opening?

well the air outside teh engine bay is always cooler than the air in teh engine bay, so if you make a hood scoop in the area where the filter is, then it will help bring in cooler air directly to teh filter of the intake, and possibly releasing some hot air in the engine bay

The injen sri places the filter directly behind the battery right next to a hole in the bay. If you get a sri i would suggest getting some cheep flexible plastic tubing and routing more air from the fender to that hole in the bay. Plus if you get a scoop, check out www.carbontrix.com (http://www.carbontrix.com) , you will be scooping in tons of cool fresh air. If your still paranoid you can get a heat shield and deflect some of the engines heat and still allow it to suck in cold air from the scoop and the hole in the bay. This setup is probably the best. Very close to same HP as a CAI and no possibility for hydrolock.

CAI. a short intake that pulls in cold air (via a scoop or whatever) will be the best though.
the small breather filters you dont need to worry about. we cant use em because our engines are MAF based.
people with MAP sensors can though. you can put these small filters on the end of your idle actuator control valve, instead of routing that tube back to the intake, around the TB. the MAp sensor is in the manifold, so it is able to sense the air coming in from the breather filter. the maf sensor however, wouldnt be able to register the air, cause it is on the intake.

i have the bomz cool air intake for my 98 and maybe it is just me but it doesnt seem like it is fitting right it is right behind my radiator fan i dont see how any cool air is getting in that way but i have taken all of the air box out any ideas if some has done it if you got a pic of the correct way that would be helpful

Yeah the air directly behind the radiator is going to super warm... Not sure why it directs the intake there...

One thing that I never seen talked about when it comes to CAI's is what happens when its raining? If the air is coming from the hood scoop would water enter if its raining?

rain wont hurt anything. your filter has to be fully submerged for it to be a problem. rain actually helps a little, cooling incoming air as it vaporizes.
