The Maserati MC12 is based on the Ferrari Enzo. It is longer, wider, taller, and heavier than the Enzo yet looks infinitely better.
It is the first factory-backed Maserati race car since Eisenhower was in office. It is backed by the factory in the American Le Mans Series.
It debuted last year in FIA GT and now also races in the American Le Mans Series (GT1 class). It won two races last year in FIA GT. Before 2004, a Maserati last achieved victory in 1967 (Cooper Maserati F1) in the South African Grand Prix.

Maserati's MC12 supercar will never contest Le Mans. The Italian carmaker said it will definitely not produce the revised version of the car demanded by the organizers of the French enduro. Maserati claims it would be too expensive to narrow the car and reduce the rear overhang to conform to Le Mans rules. "We would love to go to Le Mans," said Maserati competitions boss Claudio Berro, "but we would have to spend a lot of money to narrow it by just 66 millimeters (about 2.5 inches). It would not be cost-effective to do that." Berro said the cost would be similar to developing a new car, adding Maserati would prefer to use its resources to enter the GT2 class. "GT racing is the right category for Maserati to be involved in for the foreseeable future. New cars are needed in the GT2 category and maybe we could build one," he said. A Maserati GT2 car, Berro said, would be based around the Gran Sport model. That car is the basis of the marque's one-make Trofeo series and the Super Light that has competed in Grand-Am in the United States and the domestic GT series in Italy.

I really like these cars. The racecar is insane and the road car is also insane
The road car is ectually quicker on the top gear track then the enzo, real good because it has the same engine but detuned. Strange to read they never considered the biggest wide from their car wheil Le Mans the obvious next level is after competing at the FIA GT championship.
Great pictures too :)

The following is from maseraticorse.com:
15/10/2005 - Laguna Seca - The No. 35 Maserati MC12 would have finished on the GT1 podium had the final 2005 American Le Mans Series race run the usual two-hour 45-minute length.
But the season finale was a four-hour event and trouble hit the Maserati at 2h47, forcing an early retirement from the race.
Andrea Bertolini started the race from sixth on the GT1 grid and drove a strong stint, moving up to fourth before handing off to Fabrizio de Simone at 1h9. Quick driving, timely pit strategy and some luck with caution periods put de Simone into the class lead just past the two-hour mark of the race. He led for 17 minutes before dropping back as his tires, which hadn't been changed on the previous pit stop, started to wear.
A competitor pass clipped the Maserati, bending the right-rear toe link. The crew replaced it and sent Bertolini back on track. Riding on cold tires, he locked up the wheels, missed the apex of the Corkscrew turn and hit the curb. The impact broke the car's front splitter and radiator, taking it out of the race. It was the first time the car did not finish a race during the 10-race season.

I don't think that the MC12 will race in the 2006 season.
Risi Competizione helped Maserati with the MC12 in 2005, but they will race two Ferrari F430 GTs in the GT2 class for 2006.
