aftermarket tail lights illegal?

I was driving and i got pulled over by a cop and he said my tail lights are illegal because the turning signals were white and as i was saying this a station wagon drove by and put his turning signal on and they were white and he said that he will get pulled over too... anyways i just wanted to know if that is bs becuase i have seen plenty of factory cars with white turning signals and this is the first time that ive heard this and now i have 72 hours to change my tail lights back to factory....

Your turn signals have to be red or amber. I've never seen a car that came stock with clear turn signals. There'd be no way to know if it was their reverse lights or if they were turning. Why not just stick an amber bulb in there and be done with it?

ya my 70 year old neighbours volvo has white rear turning signals thats why i bought them in the first place and figured it was nice and legal but even when the cop pulled me over we saw a station wagon drive up and use white turning signals and he said that because mine were aftermarket they arent legal.. i dont remember the model of her volvo
but i will check that out tomorrow... but ya i dont feel like going to court over this... i guess ill try and find amber lights somewhere...

the tail light itself can be clear, but when it lights up it has to be amber or red. thats why people with clear tail lights put colored bulbs in them. That way it looks clear when its not on but when they have to use it it is still legal.

I agree with knorwj, just put an amber bulb in the socket. I imagine they sell this kinda thing at your local auto store.

I think most of the time cops only give fix-it tix for small things like that. If its $50 or less, just fix it, pay it, and get any cop to sign it off for you. If it's over $50, it would be unreasonable.

They sell white bulbs for people with colored lenses.
