I Just got a used transmission and a new clutch put in my car about 1 month ago. My problum is the car is making a clicking noise when I back up. It only makes this noise if I let out the clutch really quick and I dont think the noise stays on after I tottely let out my clutch. I am not shure were the noise is coming from. I dont know how to tell weather my trans. is bad or the guy who put in my clutch messed it up.. Is there a way to find out if my trans. is bad. Also I just had brand new break pads put in my car not that long ago and they seem to be grinding already but I dont think they are worn out. Has any one had this problum?? Could It be somthing other then the break pads??

well... it's very possible that your differential is going out if it's clicking when you back up. the grinding while coming from the general direction of the brakes may in fact be an axle or something to do w/ the transmission... if it is in fact your brakes there may be something like a pebble or foreign object stuck between the rotor and pad. u can tell if they're worn out by looking at how much of a groove is still left in the center of the pad. just look from the top of the calipur.

You need to lift both front wheels by jacking under the lower control arms if possible, to keep the suspension in compression. Then have a helper help you to rotate both front wheels backwards at the same time (because of the diff's action, if you just spin one, the other will go the opposite direction unless both are being moved), then see if you hear the sound and can pinpoint the origin. It could just be brake related, depending on what was done to them. Sometimes rotors aren't refinished correctly and have a directional cut on them, just like the grooves on a record. In one direction they can hold the pads firmly against their mounting, but in the other direction cause them to ride the grooves then snap back into position, just like the needle on a record at the end of the album. Makes a sharp click that coincides with wheel speed.

that direction being lefty... but most of the time the human eye is too "lacking" in the ability to see those kinds of things. for a machinist though, it would be a different story.

I had a Cavalier that I would have sworn on my life that the front brake pads were gone, grinding as it stopped. Yet when I'd take them apart, they were perfect. Turned out it was the front tires. They were just lightly feathered on the inside edges, and when the weight bore down on them under braking, they'd rumble in a way that felt just like grinding through the steering wheel and brake pedal.
Wierd. I actually told the service manager at the Chevy dealer he was nuts because he suggested that as the cause. I've been a mechanic for over 20 years and never heard/felt tires act like that. I went and bought a new set after blowing two in a highway debris accident, and the sound was gone after that. I went to the dealer before going home from getting the tires put on, and apologized to him for doubting him.
