are you asking for "how to retirve codes" or "how to interpret codes"?
To retireve, get an OBD1 cale and a laptop or a palm or buy a OBD1 computer. Each has different iconnections to the device, but to the ECU, its the same. look at any website or yahoo search it (Google is starting to sell out). Basically, olug into your port and i think you put the car into accesory ot the one just before you turn on your engine. I've only seen this done once in real life, but i was paying attention since i want to do something special with that knowledge.
To get codes, join the everything celica group and look at the nice code sheet they provide in PDF.
If i'm wrong (not likely) or anyone has any better suggestions (more likely), help this guy out
God bless.

i heard you can retrieve codes if you put the car in accessory and watch the over-drive light flash...this is only for automatics though...
