91 Cherokee still won't start, please help!

Ok, this is my first time posting on the forum but i've been reading through the threads for a while. I have a 91 Cherokee i6 4.0 that will crank but won't start. I went through the regular problem solutions like plugs and wires and even tried a new crankshaft position sensor. Still nothing! I'm at a loss for ideas but I read that the cps controls the spark to the coil. I rechecked the spark after the cps was installed and I still don't have spark there. Should I get a new coil? I don't want to keep buying parts and then end up in the hands of a mechanic for even more money. Any ideas or suggestions are greatly needed. I can't keep relying on public transport!

I just had the same problem on my 90. You can test the coil with a digital multimeter by removing it from the vehicle and then seperating it from the ignition control module. The HAYNES manual describes how to test it. Fortunately, it was not the coil in my case, it was the stator (also known as pick up coil or cam shaft position sensor). In order to replace the pick up coil you will have to remove the distributor.

I had the same thing with my 93 Cherokee. I took off the ignition coil and it had a large crack in it. I believe Autozone has one for around $30 or so.

If your coil is fine then you might want to try the dist. sync inside the dist. Just a heads-up though, it can test good but still be bad. Thats what I found out ...$300 later .

Try Holding the Throttle Wide open when you try to start it. If it starts there is a ballast resistor on the Drivers fender run a Jumper across the 2 terminals.
