Pick your winner: Me versus Danno SS (Round 4)

2000LS1Z28

Well Danno SS and I are gonna run on April 9 at Speedway. This will be one of several races we've had (He's won 2, and i've won one - the one from a roll :D in the former Evo). This time I won't be in the Evo, as it is sold. I'll be in my 2001 T/A WS6.

My mods are as follows: SLP underdrive pulleys, Thunderracing catback exhaust, Whisper Lid, LCA's, and PHB.

Danno's owns a 2002 Camaro SS. His mods are as follows: Z06 cam, whisper lid, subframe connectors, exhaust cutout, drag radials, and free mods.

Danno has the benefit of an automatic, not to mention drag radials. He usually cuts a 2.0-2.1 sec. 60', whereas I struggle for traction :p So who do you guys think will win?

Get a vid, but I'll be rooting for you. Simply because I'm biased and I love TA's. But a vid of that whole race would be awesome. You absolutely must get one for us here in the SR forums. Good luck to ya . L8...

I am gonna guess the SS. At least in a drag strip situation.

Otherwise, from a roll, it would be pretty damn close.

I'd say he's got a pretty easy win.

I'm giving it to the SS too, the cam, drag radials, and cutout are the more potent combo.

I'm going for the SS as well. What good is the power if you can't put it to the ground?

I'm rooting for you but he is most likely going to take you pretty easily but make sure you get a clip of it for us. Good Luck

Yeah i'm hoping to borrow a friend's camera. I'm sure Danno's gonna murder me out of the hole, but I think I may have a better reaction time then him out of the hole. Now all I need is a camera man. Hmmm, say Redneck, wanna go to Speedway with the Panda?

I'm rooting for you but the cam alone in the SS is scary.

Umm what are LCA's and PHB? Sorry if its a newb question...

Are Z06 cams really that beastly?

only 2.0-2.1 60' on DR's?

LCA = Lower control arm
PHB = PanHard Bar (guessing)

And no, the Z06 isn't a 'beastly' cam by any means.
I get 207/217 525/525 116 LSA from GM parts direct.

Stock outta the 98-00's....
198/209 500/500 119.5

hmmm they make automatic SS's? There may be hope for me after all :icon16:

Good luck. Danno runs a 13.2 sec. 1/4 mile at 105mph last I checked. Oh and Civic Racer, the track we go to sucks. Very few people on DR's run better then a 2.0 sec. 60' time. They take no pride in their track (Speedway).
As far as Z06's cams go, they're not agressive at all. He did gain about 20 whp off of the cam. Danno's pushing 338 whp in his SS. I think i'm seeing about 315-320whp with my mods.

lol you misinterpreted my response...I meant there was hope for me being able to drive one, since I am inept at driving a stick in the racing sense of the word...I'm not that dumb lol.

Dude it takes about a week to learn how to drive a stick. If you buy a manually shifted car, i'll teach you to drive it. It's not hard by any means, just not as consistant as an automatic, especially ones with a performance torque converter.

street_racer_00
03-15-2005, 10:52 PM
Yeah, but how long does it take to drive one well? I've only driven a stick twice in my life, and one was a 5-speed tractor where gears 1, 2 and 3 didn't work lol.

PWRDbyUNCLEbens
03-15-2005, 10:55 PM
It just takes practice. I know when I first learned definantley starting was the biggest problem. I wasn't able to go fast for a few weeks because I'd just misshift. :disappoin I think most people can learn sticks faster then I can though, but I consider myself good at it now.

Mr. Luos

I get the pleasure of learning a completely new clutch once my car is done. Going from a stock slipping F-Body clutch, to an on/off race clutch. Glad it is kinda streetable.

Either way, something off about Danno's trap times?? I would think it should be closer to 110. 105 is what my ass runs 5800 feet up.

I still can't drive stick, LOL.

Maybe its becuase his is an auto??? I really dont know, just offering a "what if", lol.

As for manual vs. auto, for a street car, I'd prefer a manual (way more fun to drive IMO), however, for a racecar, automatic only please (more consistant-mine is a 2-spd powerglide with an electric shift-really consistant).

Yup, the LS-6 cam is about as mild as they get for an aftermarket cam (it's the biggest GM OEM cam). I got it because it didn't require any tuning, passes CA emissions, ofters about as much of a gain as longtubes, and sounds completely stock.
+28rwhp/+8rwtq on the stock tune thru the stock exh-manifolds, it's all above 4500RPM though so I gotta wind the piss out of it (6400RPM shift points/6600 rev limiter).

I got the '02 LS-6 cam, slightly more duration and lift than the '01.
02 12565308: 204/218 551/547 117.5 LSA
01 12560950: 204/211 525/525 116 LSA

I think a hwy run would be more to the WS6s liking, Bobby. Hopefully trafiic won't be as bad as it was with the EVO. I still shudder thinking back .

My car's always been on the slow side (it's an all-option FAT pig), plus I go to crappy tracks. Bone stock the best trap and ET I got out of it was a [email protected] w/a 2.26 60'. The cam took off 3 tenths and the DR's another 2.

Cars at Speedway seem to run 0.3-0.5 seconds slower than they should. Don't know if it is that always present 15mph headwind or the track prep.

I say you just hotwire a cheater nitrous system up really quick and get that easy 50 hp shot to end this! Shooot, just spray it directly into the intake manifold, no tuning required! :icon16:

lol, j/k. I guess this will be a really even matchup. Get a vid!

Luos Speedway is at 1290 ft. elevation. I think the altitude affects N/A cars a little. Anyways, i'll run you from a roll whenever Danno. Just let me know when you wanna run them (Preferrably late at night). I think i'll outrun you from a roll though, cause this car is definitely better top end wise then the Evo.

Well we have a track that has a similar density altitude as yours. It is called LACR. It has a DA between 5000-6000 ft.

Most of the time I run, the DA is 7500+

But yeah, anything over 1500 just plain out sucks.

That's sick. When you've got Vipers barely running low 13's, you know there's something wrong :p

I guess where I normally race is close to 2000 feet above sea level. And believe it or not, Eastern, KY has high humidity during the summer as well. All of that stuff makes a big difference in a car's performance.

Mr. luos,
That new cam you have picked out sounds HUGE.

I don't mean to butt in, but unless you have significant engine work (ie heavily CNC ported heads, increased compression) that is definitely gonna slow you down unless you are running a real loose converter.

JMO, you original cam seems well-matched. You also run into the issue that it is hard to get hydraulic roller cams to rev beyond 6500 rpm w/o floating the valves.

I have a [email protected] cam in my Olds 455, it is REALLY mild, like grandma can drive it around. I have a [email protected] one ready to install, but I am tentative to put it in as I will be also putting in a 2800 rpm converter, might hurt street manners a bit.

If you don't have to drive it everyday, just stick in the max compression and the biggest stanky cam you can. The more cam and compression in there, the more bad-ass the motor sounds.

DannoSS, good luck on your race. Sounds pretty even, does you bud have a higher stall converter? That would put you at a disadvantage if he has upgraded with both a good cam and converter.

Cheers
