i was reading a write-up about several people who have taken the restrictor plate out of their clutchline in order to shift faster. is anyone familiar wiht this and would you suggest it or advise not to do it?

Removing it will allow the clutch to grab faster. When making a lot of power it can cause some premature clutch wear since it effectively automatically rides the clutch. ;) Removing it however lets the clutch engage faster as mentioned, which can increase the shock to the drivetrain increasing the risk of breakage. As with everything else, the part was put their by the factory for a reason, and you have to weigh the pros and cons of making such a change. I personally remove them. They are inside the line fitting on the slave cylinder. Pop it out with a paper clip or other small tool (.050 allen wrench might fit, etc).
