Fuel Pump

I have a 2001 Pontiac Sunfire.....just bought it 2 months ago from a dealership. It only has 50K miles. The other day it wouldn't start-sounded like it wanted to but wouldn't turn over....
Had friend check it all out....fuses, relay, fuel filter, etc.....Finally he said it is the fuel pump..
He dropped the gas tank and pulled out the fuel pump. Priced around for fuel pumps and found one for $209.00.
He is putting it in now and I am praying it will start. But my question is why would a fuel pump go out on a vehicle with only 50K miles?? Does that seem odd? Also I only had a 30 day warranty with the dealership-but do you think they would do anything since I only had it for a couple of months and only 50k miles??? What do you think? Will let yall know if we still can't get it working! I would appreciate your help..I am newly single and just luckily found someone who knows something about cars to help me-no way I could afford labor costs.
Thanks a bunch,
Vicky

Electric fuel pumps are quite fragile pieces of equipment. When they work correctly they can last 200K miles but they can often go bad for a lot of reasons. Running the tank too low can cause it to overheat, dirt in the tank can cause the filter sock to plug and make the pump work too hard causing it to burn out. I had one go out of an Escort at 51K so I know where you are coming from. I am very glad you found someone to help you with repairs. This is usually about a $400 job depending on the labor rate.
