The car dies at 40mph? I had a similar problem. When i would go the car would be fine until I got to 35-40 mph, then the car would just suddenly bog right down to nearly nothing and usually die, but it always started right back up. It turned out to be my fuel filter. After i changed that everything was good again. Your problem sounds a little different though, however it does sound something related to fuel delivery, but i wouldn't rule out an electrical problem. Check your fuel pump, lines, filter. Also check all your spark plug wires, ignition coil/connections, and get you spark control module checked out (or check it yourself).
