Aright guys i have a cooling fan problem on my 93 escort wagon. At first i thought it didnt work at all, then is put power straight from the battery to the fan and then the fan started working. When i turn on my a/c the fan also starts working. However the fan doesn't work when the engine gets hot like it is supposed to. I was wondering what can be the cause fo this. I need alll possiblities available. Do you guys noe where all the relays are at, the onlones ive been able to find is the one in the fusebox. Could the relays be the problem?

Radiator thermal sensor maybe? I'm just guessing, because the only time when it doesn't work for you is when engine gets hot.

I do not have a 93 wiring diagram...so my response will be from general knowledge.

Your narrative eliminates several things:
1. The fan/s work.
2. The cooling fan relay is working since the fan/s come on when you activate the A/C. (Both circuits use the same circuit)

The fans should come on when the temperature reaches approx. 207F. Are you sure the engine coolant temperature is up near the top of the gauges normal range? If you aren't sure, run the engine at approx. 2000 while sitting still until it reaches the upper 7/8 of the gauge normal range. If engine temperature reaches that level and the fans do not come on....we will move on to the next trouble shooting step. NOTE: In this cold weather, the engine cooling fans don't run very often.

The signal to the EEC or the Fan Temp. switch is initiated by the CTS (cooling temperature sensor near the thermostat housing) to turn the fans on. I would check the CTS connection first. If you have a DVOM or a VOM I can walk you through a simple test procedure if you want to troubleshoot it yourself.

are both the high speed and lo speed relays in the fusebox, in the engine compartment? Are theyre any other relay that are present?

anyone?

they should be.

Just take a look under the coil pack to see if your sensor is even pluged in. When I first bought my scort the sensor kept falling off so I had to zip tie it on.

The relay in the underhood fusebox is the ignition relay. The two radiator fan relays are on the driver side fender. Remove the air hose from the air cleaner box to the manifold, and remove the air cleaner box, no other way. The two radiator fan relays are in a rubber wrap on a bracket, you'll see the wires.

On mine, the two relays both worked when I applied voltage from the battery. But the fan didn't come on even when the temp gauge needle was over half way. I jumped the power terminal ( hot in run ) to the low speed fan terminal, and the fan comes on low speed whenever the ignition key is switched on, which works OK here in CA where the temperature hardly ever gets under 40F, the heater blows hot air after a few minutes.

Temp gauge gets up to maybe a fifth or sixth of range, even idling for fifteen minutes. In summer, 100F, with the air conditioning on, it gets up to maybe a quarter of full scale in traffic jams, but that's OK.

I had 1 quart per thousand mile oil leak at the head gasket, right over the timing belt, before I jumped the relays to keep the fan on all the time, between a quart of stop leak and the fan, the leak has quit.

I think the real problem is in the wiring somewhere but I gave up on checking that, too many wires and connections.

I have had a similar issue with my fan. The motor tested fine at both speeds and the relays on the fender checked out as well as fuses. I replaced the sending unit that feeds info to the computer... checked all wiring... the only thing left that makes any sense is that the computer is not switching it on when it is supposed to. I have a new computer on the way and will see if it helps. I actually have a couple problems and am hoping the computer will fix them both.
