My 96 yukon gt for some reason is freaking out.First my courtesy(dome)lights would not turn off,the auto lock (on driver side only) is dead, now my rear glass hatch will not open when the release button is pushed on the console but opens on it's own when the vehicle is put into park.Is the car possessed or what?Help if you can,any suggestions are appreciated.

i recommend getting a good gun, baseball bat, or tire iron whatever you fancy, and having at the jalopy. but if that doesn't flip your switch take it to your nearest electrical specialist. it sounds pretty bad and electrical is never ever easy. the short could be anywhere... and the whole thing could need to be rewired, it could also be as simple as some popped fuses... electrical is a nightmare... pay a specialist or get a new car. good luck

Hi,
I agree. This takes oldfashioned wire tracing.
You may want to take the dashboard apart and inspect for wire damage, may be look around the steering column and see, if something got tangled up. You have to be determined and have a good wiring diagram.
This either is a fun project or something for a good automotive electrical shop.
The rear glass switch and the gearshift selector are connected so that you can not pop the glass while driving. That may be a starting point.
I am not sure about the dome light on a 96.
The new body style vehicles have a body control module that does remote door locks and other things, including the dome light.
That would take a scan tool (=dealer) to diagnose.

Please post the outcome.

take it to an electric shop is not what this place is for but i do agree with the gun. your right the electrical problems are the worst. i would rather pound my balls flat with a 4 lb hand sledge than find an electrical problem.
now geting that off my chest i have seen shorts in the most unlikely places. when i worked at the plant, (GM assembly plant) we had someone put a wireing harness in the wrong spot and it got pinched under the front seat ancor bolt, causing a short in the tail lights. so it would not surprise me if a wire is pinched and it just took this long to show up. the colum is the best place to start, if any wire looks frade or chaffed, start with those. its to bad we can't get ahold of the old build manuls we had at the factory, they give routing diagrams, wireing diagrams do not. good luck, like i said wireing problems suck!
