Its hard to tell between a bad torque converter and a bad trans. If your trans fuild is clean and doesn't smell burnt take your truck to a trans shop. They will have the tools to check the pressure of the trans fuild that is made by the torque converter.

the torq converter turns two shafts that go into the front of tranny and make the fluid pump work.
haven't heard of a torq converter going bad, remove the bottom tranny line from the radiator, start the truck no fluid the pump is bad and probly burned up the tranny, if fluid comes out then have the tranny checked

What problems are you seeing?

my 93 s10 4.3 cpi has 148k....
runs...perfect.......except.
when i floor the gas....i hear the sound of an engine at wide open throttle...but i dont get the power.......not quite a slipping..like a bad clutch.
there is still pulling..just not like normal.
almost like something is holding back the power :(
if i didnt nail the gas youd never suspect a problem...the trans goes threw the gears fine....holds speed in every gear.......just this problem...at w.o.t.
no strange noises either....
btw ..the fluid is at the right level....and the filter is new ...was replaced about 3 k miles ago.

Is it downshifting when you floor it?

BlazinUP
03-18-2005, 10:36 PM
yes it downshifts....and the engine sounds purrfict.......like normal.....
xcept the power feels restrained.
at times it feels almost like a bad clutch would feel (slipping wise)
other times it feels like its slipping..then bamm....the power comes back.

REplace the cap and rotor first.

It has to be changed.

BlazinUP
03-19-2005, 08:17 PM
because you think thats causing my problem...?
or because you think it needs to be changed?
do you believe a bad cap or rotor would cause this type of problem........even after iv said the engine itself.....revs and sounds perfect....starts...idles...etc......

BlazinUP

clutch pack....what and where is that....never heard of that before.

Definitely could be the problem if the cylinders are getting the proper spark to ignite the fuel properly.

Might as well progress from the known things you need to replace before we move on to the more complicated parts and possible fixes.

Clutch pack is actually the transmission internals. My 93 is the same as yours. I notice I can floor it at about 445 mph and it goes like stink, but floor it at about 65 and it jumps a gear and screams, but doesn't really go anywhere. Think it's just the nature of the vehicle.

nope mine ran like hell....in every gear at anyspeed..
shifted smooth and with plenty of power untill last sunday..........
if your truck is running like that or shifting bad get it looked at...cause it for shure shouldnt do that.

auto tranny belts loose ... get tranny belts tightened if possible or replace at qualified tranny shop. go light on gas in meantime so as not to worsen it faster.

do a torque convertor stall test. find out what the factory stall speed (rpm) is on the torque convertor. when u find that out warm up your engine and do the following. hold down the brake pedal and give is gas at the same time. when your vehicle starts moving record the rpm at the time it starts to move. this is the actual stall speed (rpm) of the torqu convertor. compare the stall speed to the factory setting. if it is higher than normal then the vanes in your torque convertor are most like bend from overheating. this is common in vehicles that are constantly towing or hauling stuff.

yep, there was a seperate post trying to prove the existence (or lack there of) of clutch packs, it was decided they do exists, and a formal apologie went out, but, if we hadnt gotten an answer yet, this would have been awsome for me! thanks chcknugget

do you have a stereo system..in your truck?

if you do get a good new battery.......
and high out put alternator//////...
i found my new system was taking more from my electrical system...than it could put back fast enough...eventually damaging my batt making it weaker///
as a result my fuel pump wasnt getting enough juice to power it at high rpm's........
got new batt.....fixed.....next im gettin a high output alt.....and a capacitor......
hope this helps...........
