Hi Everyone,

Okay I have a 1997 Pontiac Grand Prix GTP, I've gone through 4 fuel pumps and I'm wondering why?? Is there something in my car that keeps messing with my fuel pumps?? I just replaced the 3rd pump with the 4th today. I took it to an automotive repair shop and they said that it was the fuel pump that had gone bad and were going to charge me $900 something dollars to fix it but I did it myself and it started I let it run for a bit then turned it off, turned it on again to make sure everything was okay and it was fine........I tried it a 3rd time and it started then idled out again...and now wont even start up...the place I took it too said that it has low fuel pressure is there something else that could be wrong with it, besides the fuel pump?? And they said that it could be just that the new fuel pump was missing some clips that held some of the tubing to the module and that could be what is wrong with it....that just seems a little to simple of an explanation for my liking.....anyway someone please help me.....what's wrong with my car???

Low fuel pressure, if not fuel pump, most likely = fuel pressure regulator. Buy a new fuel pressure regulator, and while you're at it, you might as well by a nice one with adjustable pressure.

Here's a good one by caspers - I've heard of them lots before and they're a reliable company

Sorry, but I wouldnt waste my money on an aftermarket one.

Here is what ZZP say's about them.

Adjustable Fuel Pressure Regulator

On many boosted cars fuel pressure needs to be raised as boost is added to compensate for extra air. The Grand Prix uses 2 methods to control fueling which render an AFPR worthless. The MAF sensor on the car reads the airflow and tells the PCM how much air is coming in and therefore how much fuel to deliver. As you mod and increase flow the MAF reads more and increases fuel. The stock FPR changes fuel pressure with boost. As your boost increases so does your fuel pressure. By changing this function by replacing the factory regulator you make your car impossible to tune. Adding fuel pressure doesn't change the maximum pressure because your stock pump is limited to low 60's in psi. So even though you might add 5 pounds at idle and cruising you're not adding that much at WOT. This makes tuning the car a nightmare. All the ZZP cars run stock regulators. If you have an aftermarket unit on your car, sell it and go back to stock. Thank us later...

Thanks for your help, I was kinda thinking it was something like the fuel pump regulator after reading a couple of the other threads. But i do have another question now. I just talked with the guy that's diagnosing my car problem and he said that my fuel pump was missing the clamps that connect the hoses to the fuel pump module and that, that might be the problem. What do you think about that??? and how much should I be expecting to pay to replace the FPR?? Thanks for answering my questions

another question.....what's the difference between the fuel pump regulator and the fuel pump resistor?? someone else told me i could bypass the fuel pump resistor and that may help and not do any damage to the fuel pump. Comments??

This is how to by-pass the resistor

can not having the O ring on the fuel pump be okay because i tried putting it on but i can't seem to get it to fit, is there some kinda trick to it?? and where exactly is it supposed to go?? And....the clips that hold the hoses to the fuel pump if those aren't on there (because the new pump didn't come with them) can that burn out the relay for the pump?? That's what the mechanic said might have burned out the relay because when i put on the new fuel pump and started it 3 times he said I might have burned out the relay??.....and is it necessary to disconnect the battery before you start messing with the fuel pump if anything that's what i didn't do.....so i'm thinking that might have been what burned out the relay.....comments?? BTW i'm gettin charged 266.70 or should i say RAPED to replace my relay and put the O ring and clips on the fuel pump.....which he said will solve my problems.

Just out of curiosity, are you taking your car to the same guy everytime? He may be screwing you over. Not like that has ever happened before. Looking at your screen name, are you female? If you are, that may be another problem with the mechanic. I am female and I have had guys that have attempted to screw me over, but I fixed that when I knew what they were talking about. Was raised by a race car driver and dated a mechanic. Got taught pretty well to hold my own.
