hey, i was wondering...What is the big deal about V-Tec? I know it is variable valve timing, but why do people brag about it? Dont most cars have V-Tec, but just dont label it that? What gains does it give you and why do honda people brag so much about it?

more and more modern cars are getting technology like vtec. ie. MIVEC, and the toyota version.

vtec really gives an extra boost at the upper RPMs. thats why most hondas have very low torque but can rev high. its nothing to brag about. ive beaten a vtec integra twice. no big deal

at a certain rpm range only 2 of the valves work. but once a certain rpm is reached, the other 2 or 3 or however many kick in. at least thats how i understood it when i looked at the street bike with it.

there is however, a certain block design that sends oil underneath the skirt of the piston to lubricate those bearings....not sure of the designation #s

and uh, there is a third irregular lobe on the cam for when the rpm is reached to allow more air/fuel junk in

and usually a giant wing and trashcan exhaust is found on vtec equipped whips.

definately. so much so you might need to put a wheelie bar on the back. you know, to maintain all that traction.

definately. so much so you might need to put a wheelie bar on the back. you know, to maintain all that traction.

they would also put drag radials on the REAR wheels, to keep that traction too

ive actually seen a guy on ebay selling an eclipse with a VTEC decal across the sideskirts.

and there is a guy in my town who has a red GT eclipse. he took the GT badge on the back and put a big red R underneath it to make it look like a GT-R symbol. it looks alot like a skyline badge. i just laughed my ass off

vtec/mivec or equivalents are excellent technology for NA cars. You can actually feel the vtec/mivec pull the car all the way to red line... NA cars with the same engine but without this, you can feel the car slowing down as you reach redline. Vtec technology is a nifty little thing, and does not substitute a turbo/supercharger/displacement for power...it just helps out the engine a little for whatever it is. which is why we like to laugh at the honda people when they say "and then the vtec KICKED IN and it was AWESOME etc etc...". The vtec integras and preludes are rather fast for NA 4-bangers, ill give em that though GSR, type-r, etc).
