I have a 91 sierra, i recently checked the fluid level and when i removed the bolt fluid came pouring out. My question is what is the proper amount of fluid that is supposed to be in the case? I think that there was too much fluid so i drained fluid until i could stick my finger in the hole and touch fluid, is this correct, if not what is the proper way, and amout of fluid to have in it and how would they get that much fluid in it to begin with.
Thanks

On my 90 K1500, I always filled up until fluid started to come out the fill hole (similar to how I fill the diffs). Once it starts to come out, I leave the fill plug out for a few minutes and let the level settle. Then put the fill plug back in.
They could have pumped it in and then put the fill plug on really fast. That is probably the only way they could have over filled it. Maybe a guy at one of those quick lube places pumped too much in but did not let the level settle.

if you drive through lots of deep water and the vent hose is broken another possibility. sometimes if the transmission rear seal is shot it can push fluid into the t-case but this is very rare. stay away from those quick lube places.
