My boyfriend recently bought a '93 cavalier, standard. Hes out of town right now for work and its been giving my problems starting, about once a day. I will have the car in gear and clutch engaged and turn the key and get no turn-over. All I get is power (heat, lights, ect.) So I've just by-passed the clutch sensor of switch(forget what its called). And thats not the problem because I didnt start again. What you have to do to get it started is pop the clutch, but also have to have the key turned all the way on, not just to the power part. lol, so yah I think it might be the starter but I just wanted to get some adive from other people before I spend too much money! Thanks, and sorry for the crappy description of my problem, Its a girl thing!

it could be a number of things. if you bypassed/removed the clutch sensor, then lets assume its not that. i highly doubt its a starter, they either work or dont... or degrade, not on off. if the turning mechanism is tight inside the steering column, then we can factor that out as well. if it were the starter going bad, youd hear it trying to start but not turning fast enough to do it. i dont have an answer for you as of yet, need more info, but if its an on/off thing, it isnt the starter

also thinking that it could possibly be ignition switch!?

if it is the ignition switch, you should be able to tell. itll feel loose when it doesnt start. my original guess would have been the clutch sensor, since you said you took care of that... starters dont go on and off. it could possibly be a loose ground. are there any constant variables when the car doesnt start? as in only on a hill, when its cold, etc?

No there's no real constant variables in my case, she just doesn't start when she doesn't want to. Occasionally it's been in the cold but it hasn't started in the warmer weather too. Its just a kick in the ass when it doesn't start. My dad was saying that it could probably be a loose ground, so maybe I'll get a mechanic to check that out first before I do anything major. Thanks for all your help with eliminating things which I thought were the problems!!
