Took my IAC valve for a cleaning.......

I am trying to fix my idling problem on the '87 TPI. The valve had a lot of carbon built up. It flaked off very easy though, I was expecting it to be baked on and hard to clean. I just hope that was the answer to my problem.

If it had alot of carbon build up. It very likely is the cause but good luck.

I certainly hope it is! I will go thru with the rest of your advice on resetting the idle and so forth.

If what you are trying doesn't work, I would really think about a vacuum leak somewhere...

Are you sure all the basics are covered with the igntition system and all injectors are fireing correctly?

I've checked the plugs and wires and dist. cap. How do you check the injectors for firing properly? I did find a couple of injector wires that were spliced by twisting together. They seemed to be twisted tight with a good connection though.

injector testing is pretty well covered in your other thread on this issue. The break in wiring you speak of: does the car have remote start or once did? That's probably an old connection for the remote start if so.

What about the MAF as FormualLT1 suggested, I've heard of bad relays (there's two of them, one for the burnoff function and one for the maf itself) doing funky things. Try and start it cold with the MAF disconntected and see if there's any change, no change could be an indication there's a problem with the MAF in which these engine mgmt. systems are prone.
