I have an 86 Grand Am 6 cyl. And today it started making a bit of a spuutering and popping noise. Along with that it refuses to go faster if I press the pedal and such. ... ... Can someone quickly diagnose this for me I need a vehicle and like.. this old thing is all I have. ... ... Along with the no money to fix anything yet... :uhoh:

My 96 did the same thing today, my problem was major spitting and sputtering and had no power. when I stopped and looked under the car the Catalytic converter was so hot that it was glowing red. The converter is clogged. I don't know if this is your problem but I would get it looked at for a clogged or restricted cat, converter. There are other items that can cause your problem, things like bad spark plugs and/or wires, could be coik packs, It could even be some bad gas that could cause this kind of problems.

I hope this helps.

Well, I'm like mechanically impaired and I have no money... ... How can I tell without spending money to have someone look at it? Plus I can look at it before I need to drive it to school tomorrow cause... I sort of have no other way to get there.

Well, if the Cat. converter is glogged enough it will do what mine did, after it runs for a little bit that converter will turn bright red if it does shut the car off. the heat could cause a fire and you don't want that. As for the other issues I mentioned you will need to get it looked at because they are all internal items. Sorry, wish it could be easier, too bad you didn't just have a flat tire.

Of you Know anyone at school that has some mrchanical back ground they might be able to help you out.

I guess if I have tht ime I can drop it off at the highschool here in town being that it's only 2 blocks away. But in order to do that I may need to take the day off school... Or call.. Public transportation (*haunting music cause I owe them money.*)

many things, old engine, plugs, bad gas, clogged injector body. Like Hoag said, could be exhaust restriction.

Start with can of injector cleaner in tank, it only around 2-3$, it won't hurt.
