reverse lockout sylenoid(can't spell)

i'm not exactly sure what the reverse lockout sylenoid on a t56 tranny does... does it keep you from going into reverse? or stop you from getting out of reverse? and can i drive the car (as in forward and reverse) without having this sylenoid hooked up?

I'm pretty sure it's used to keep you from going into reverse.

Yep it keeps you from going in reverse after the car is going a certain speed. I think it engages after 5 or 10 mph.

do i need it hooked up to be able to drive the car and put it in reverse? i thought i heard somewhere that it had something to do with the driver having to push the brake some in order to get into reverse... i really don't know what it does, i'm more concerned wether or not i need to figure out how to wire it up... or forget about it...

you should be able to drive without it. just if you put your car in reverse while doing 50 or more you can wave bye bye to your tranny.

Its a nice thing to have seeing how the gears are so damn close together in the T56. I like it so when my dad drives my car his bad shifting skills dont show too much on my tranny.

that's good, i mean that i can drive it... i wasn't sure on how to wire it up anyway... besides i've felt the gears, reverse is a little ways farther to the right than 5th is... as in it is farther from 5th than 5th is to 3rd and so on, so i think i would be able to keep myself from doing so

once you get the hang of it, you wont have a problem

on the t56 6-speed, does the reverse lock-out solenoid need power to energize the solenoid into keeping you from entering the reverse gear? or is it opposite, that the solenoid takes power to allow the shifter to go into reverse? if i don't wire up the solenoid, is it going to keep me from going into reverse? or will it already be out of the way?

I bet it for when your down shifting form 6th to 5th. So you dont slam the car in to reverse :iagree:

I don't know for sure about unhooking the lock-out. If you unplug the solenoid wire for the skip-shift, you can go into gear with no power going to the solenoid... so I would think the rev. lockout would work the same way.

heres a test....
someone go out to their 6 speed (Im too lazy) and see if it goes into reverse while the cars off. if it does, then it obviously doesnt need power to it in order for it to go into reverse.

drvngstorm05 technically you could do this too...if its all mounted up and such.

i went out earlier this morning and mine did go into reverse without turning the car on, but i also started the car and rolled down the road a little and easily tried going into reverse and the gears started rubbing :confused: so i dont know how its sopposed to be. unless i wasnt going fast enough....i dont know what to tell you, my tranny came from a 96 trans am, so it should have this reverse lockout,
unless i didnt hook it up.
