*Please bear with me and help if you can :) *
I have been trying to get this issue resolved since December!
My engine light has been on since about August of last year, and I took it to 2 places and they said nothing was wrong. They cleaned the injectors and reset the codes so the light went off, but both times the Check Engine light came back on 3 days later.
Finally, the car started to idle really rough and almost died (worse when the car was stopped at a light). When I parked the car, the engine light started to blink!! I have never heard of this before! I took it to the Hyundai dealership, and after they had the car for a day, they said the problem was fixed.
The next day, I was on the highway and I went to accellerate and no gas went to my engine and the car did not accelerate. A loud noise came from under the hood and the car started to want to choke and die! The light came back on and I barely made it home. Needless to say the car was back at the dealership the next morning.
This time they had the car for ONE FULL MONTH! The best that they came up with wast that all four cylinders were misfiring and they didn't know why. They swapped a bunch of parts with known good ones from a newer elantra and they didn't help. These include: fuel pump, computer, computer wires, lifter arms, fuel rails, and engine coils. There were also new spark plugs and wires replaced. I also have a brand new timing belt on it.
Finally, the dealership told me to take the car home! There was nothing else they could do because the Tech Line at Hyundai USA Headquarters said not to call them any more regarding my car! They didn't want to hear about it anymore!
Now I am stuck with a car that still has the engine light on and has crappy acceleration, and idles roughly.
Any ideas on what could be wrong, and why the engine light blinks? Thank you in advance for your help.

... I will start of by saying I did not have time to see this coming. The first real problem we had with this car was in 2002 when the Tranny went. It would reverse not accelerate. Gah. Had Aamco rebuild it... Broke again... had Aamco fix it... broke again (repeat 6 times)
Well we had to shift like a manual 3rd gear, accel, 2nd gear, accel, Drive. Well the first week of July it didn’t shift... Engine light was always on for the life of me (why I do not know) and as I was heading across a bridge on the way to work the car started to shake violently and the engine light was flashing. I thought it was over heating. I was in grid lock traffic (4th of July weekend on a large beach) and was stuck in traffic. I shut the car off let it sit. Fired up and it was a lil better. But it kept happening. Got to work ok two nights in a row...
Well third night I am going down the main road the car started to shake violently again. When I hit the gas it would chug along trying to do something but wasn’t do much. I pulled off. Turned it off then turned it back on. Now it would not accelerate at all. I mean I was FLOORING it and nothing. Just sputters. It stalled once. Then it started to gas some... I made it home.
A week later I tried it... The second it fired up it smelled like gas and was smoking bad out of the muffler. I turned it off and said f' it.
Well I was searching online and saw this and about fell out of my chair... Have you had any luck with your problem?
Email me if you can id like to hear more about this.

The only thing I can say is it could be some other problem they haven't thought of. Usually the Check Engine light has something to do with the fuel/exhaust system. Mine came on when my catalytic converter went out, for example. They should be able to hook up diagnostic equipment and see what the computer is saying the problem is. Mine had a code that referenced the catalytic converter specifically.
As for the rough idle/sputtering problem, mine did this once when I had mistakenly put a piece of the Mass Air Flow (MAF) system in backwards. The oxygen sensor was getting weird readings (obviously) and caused the engine to lug way down. Perhaps you should have someone check the MAF system any make sure everything's ok.
Other than that, I don't know what to tell you. I hope you can get it figured out.
Oh by the way--Mine's a '99 (2.0L 4 cyl)

Hi, there,
I was looking through these for an answer and found your thread. Think I'll start a new thread to see of anyone else has ideas but thought I'd answer this in case you were checking. I just bought a used 97 Elantra wagon, and the check engine light was on, they hooked it up and reset it and it's on again. Also, I have the opposite problem from some of you, I don't have stalling, but revving, like trying to accelerate on the highway, it seems like it's in neutral for a minute sometimes, or I have to do it slower. I looked this up on another auto forum (am I allowed to mention that here?) and it said that there is a modified transmission control module. Then it says that check engine light may be related to this on "SOHC" models. BUt then the review I was reading said they only came in "dual over head cam" model. Make any sense? And do you know anything about what a "TCM" is or what it might cost or take to install it? Thought I might call a dealership and ask about it, but probably wouldn't have the work done there! ;) Thanks for any help, or hope this helps you.
