Grind/rattle behind instrument cluster

My 2001 Suburban has recently developed a grinding/rattling noise behind the instrument cluster, specifically behind the tachometer.

I had a car years ago that the speedo cable got dry and needed lubricating and it made the same noise. Do newer automobiles still have speedo cables???

The road can be perfectly smooth and it still makes the noise. Goes away at speeds above 30mph or so.

Any suggestions?

i would say just at a guess you hit the nail on the head, now pull cluster or cable and lube it if you can. unless its digital, but there is anouther thing it could be and thats the gears for the speedo or mileage odomiter good luck

I had something similar in my 99 and it turned out to be so simple that I felt stupid. Look at the trip odometer - is it at 999? If so, it will sometimes get stuck trying to roll over to 000. Just push the reset button if that's it. Don't feel bad if you've already pulled the instrument cluster -- you'll do dumber things in your life. Let me know if this is it. By the way, I don't think the newer models use speedometer cables.

Thanks for the suggestion, but the odometer on the 2001 models are digital. I'm wondering if there are any moving parts left in the newer style consoles.
