at vs mt

ive noticed that there are alot of 2g gsx's for sale that are automatic, and i was wondering if an automatic transmission could actually take the abuse of racing, which is more reliable an auto or manuel, and what is the stock 1/4 mile time for and auto vs a manuel???

I would go with a mt if it were me but thats just cause they are funner, and everyone i know runnin decent times is usin mt, but im curious to see what the at would hold....i dont know though......you could always do what i did, i converted my esi from auto to manual....but i duno how hard that would be on a 2g....

First eclipse I drove was my friend's manual gsx, when he was drunk at a party. I launched the car a bit without trying and I was hooked. From that happy experience, I'm partial to a manual. People also look at you like a pussy if you drive an automatic.

With such a huge price difference between auto's and manuals, I went with an auto. It's not as fun, but neither are car payments. Your call. I plan on selling my auto soon for a manual.

Auto transmissions don't seem to last as long as manual trannies, in general. But doing the work yourself, building an auto is cheap, and they hold horsepower well. There are fast auto's into the nines; it's possible. Whatever you choose, make sure you're happy with the car you buy. An investment of this size isn't something you want to reflect back upon as a mistake.

a stock manual would be better than a stock auto but a modded auto would be more solid than a manual and would run nearly the same time each pass, if you're looking at it strictly for racing, auto's aren't a bad deal but for everyday driver with some track runs i would go for a manual.

Stick with the stick. I'm never going back to auto until the wife (dont have one) wants me to buy a car where the kids (dont have em neither) can fit in. Im never having kids.

definately keep to a stick if your looking for quick acceleration. even with a computer change to the time the car shifts, u can still hang down in a lower gear with a stick. im also convinced it is easier to do tight corners and keep your speed up in a stick.

Im with Kevin on this one. The Manual Vs Auto debate has been discussed many many times. The guys who are saying to go with a stick have valid points. But a worked up auto tranny can also get you close to the fun you can have with a manual. 650-700.00 in tranny upgrades to an auto and you you wouldnt believe the difference.

Not even! I've seen poeple put the same money into their autos as I pay for ONE clutch (and I paid for 3 2600s the season before last) and rip off some nice times. Russ coxe is running 9s in an aitomatic 2g, and others are doing well also, just not 9s. Partly because no one tries it. If you look at the 2 fastest 4g63 powered cars though, they are both autos. Quite different of course (2 speed powerglide), but fundamentally it says something about auto vs manual ;) Extreme used to blow 5 speed drivetrains up left and right. Shep does better, but its nice to be a tranny builder ;) But here I go reposting this stuff again.

I'm not saying autos are better than standards. Out of the box the standard cars are typically faster. But if you are going to rebuild/build anyway, the field is a little more level. I would REALLY like to build an auto car to see for myself how it does, but I doubt I will work up the motivation. I have the tranny in the garage just in case that day ever comes though ;)
